Earlier Tuesday, Jenkins ordered that du Pont receive treatment for what she determined was a contin ued severe mental disability. At the sentenc mg hearing, m en tal health experts said du Pont no longer suffers from the paranoid schizophrenia that made him see ghosts But two defense doctors tes tified that he could return to the abyss if forced to serve his sentence in prison rather than a mental hospital. Jenkins heard testimony from doc tors, friends and Schultz’s widow before announcing the sentence. Du More than a year after John E. du Pont fired three deadly shots at Olympic champion wrestler David Schultz, the chemicals heir was sen tenced Tuesday to 13 to 30 years in prison for the crime. D elaw are C ounty C om m on Pleas Judge Patricia Jenkins pro nounced the sentence after a day long hearing during which du Pont apologized to Schultz’s widow and children. “1 wish to apologize to Nancy Schultz and her children, and I’m very sorry for what happened,” du Pont said, speaking publicly for the first time about the killing. In February, the 58-year-old du Pont could have received to five to 40 years in custody and a $50,000 fine. Two defense experts and one for the prosecution testified that eight months o f treatment at Norristown State Hospital have countered du Pont’s paranoid schizophrenia. They said he no longer poses a threat to him self or others, a yard stick for determining where he should begin serving his sentence. But the defense experts said they fear a lack o f controls in prison will allow du Pont to stop taking his anti psychotic dnigs. “Were he to either be placed in a stressful situation ... or he stop du Pont would someday return home. Du Pont killed Schultz, 38, as the 1984 Olympic gold medalist was tinkering with his car in the driveway o f his home on the edge o f du Pont’s Newtown Square estate and wres tling center. Du Pont locked him self inside his mansion for two days after the shooting, negotiating with police on the telephone. He was captured when he walked outside to fix his heater. „ .. Witnesses said du Pont’s,slide into mental illness began after his mother died in 1988. Jurors heard tales o f du Pont using cocaine, casu ally toting around guns and believ- taking his medication, that would again show an acute exacerbation o f the paranoid illness ... and he would pose a potential danger to himself and others,” forensic psychologist Gerald Cooke said. Prosecution, widow looked for long sentence Prosecutors pressed for a stiff sentence. Nancy Schultz also asked for a lengthy sentence for the man who killed her husband on January 26, 1996, and left her two children without their father. D e fe n se la w y e r T hom as Bergstrom was pleased with the Feb ruary 25 verdict even though the jury rejected his client’s insanity defense. Bergstrom has expressed hope that mg he was the Dalai Lama. Defense psychiatrists testified that du Pont killed Schultz out o f a paranoid delusion that the wrestler, his longtime friend, was an agent o f an international conspiracy to kill him. Prosecutors said du Pont killed Schultz because he was jealous o f the respect Schultz commanded in the wrestling world. Nancy Schultz has sued du Pont for damages result ing from her husband’s death. Du Pont also has an agreement pending in court that would allow estranged relatives to take over con trol o f his financial affairs, valued at an estimated $250 million.
