As on his previous nine record ings, Robert Cray brings a real love and passion to creating music. The 1997 release o f ‘Sweet Potato Pie’ not only shows that passion but continues the rich tradition o f great Southern soul music. R eco rd ed in its e n tire ty in M em phis, R o b ert’s latest work harkens back to the m id-60s and early '7 0 s when legendary labels like ‘S tax ’ and ‘H i’ dom inated the R&B charts. Utilizing the renowned Mem phis Homs (W ayne Jackson and Andrew Love) and his own road band (Jim Pugh on keyboards, Karl Sevareid on bass and Kevin Hayes on drums), the Gram m y-w inning singer, guitarist, songw riter and producer has crafted an album that faithfully recreates the “ feel” of Southern-style R&B, at the same time ensuring that the music bears his own personal stamp and dis tinctly contem porary feel. “ Most o f our records have been recorded in the Bay area, which is where I’m based,” notes Cray. “This time, we wanted to go somewhere heroes like Otis Redding and O.V. Wright were recording. I must say the spirit of that time is still there somewhat and making this album in the city was a great experience for all o f us.” who were on so many o f the great records that were made in Memphis in the late ’60s and the ’70s. I’ve often dreamt about what it must have been like to be in the studios in Memphis when many of my musical else and Memphis felt like the right place. John Hampton - who had worked as'an engineer on some of my previous albums - was there and o f course if you 're going to use horns, who better than Andrew and Wayne Rexall Rose has held over 300 events which have included lull length plays, a circus, trapeze artists, all types o f live music (funk, techno, acoustic, jazz, bluegrass, reggae, soul), independent film screening, bellydancing, break-dance, radio plays, and cabarets o f many themes. The space is also used for bicycle workshops, group and business meet ings, and rehearsals. Every event or performance is charged on a sliding scale, allowing each person to choose within that scale what they will/can pay for the art i st/performers work. New ow nership took over in May 1996 and renovated in the w inter o f 1996. It has becom e neighborhood place to share sto ries, experiences, art. projects and a good cup o f coffee. Many come to enjoy the m onthly art show s, w rite a letter or journal entry, en gage in a conversation across the antique red floral couches, to check the housing notebook for rental listings and room m ate requests, and to pick up their favorite local new spaper.
