Ph D. Dr. Mae Jemison made history when she became America’s first African-American woman to fly through space on the Endeavor shut tle mission in 1992. Following a rou tine traffic in Houston four years later. Dr. Jemison again flew through space. A Houston police officer body slammed her to the ground, twisted her wrist and arms and slapped hand cuffs on her. The officer claimed that she resisted arrest for an outstanding traffic warrant. Dr. Jemison denied it. In that brutal moment. Dr. Jemison was not a celebrated black woman praised by the president and applaud ed by the public for her contributions to the nation’s space program but a "gangsta. ” It was a harsh reminder that to much o f America, black wom en like black men have also become a menace to society. The massive media depiction o f black men as “at risk” and “endan gered” masks the damage that gen der and racial stereotypes wreak on black women. The roughhousing o f Jemison mocks the popular myth that black women are not considered as physical threats and economic com petitors to white males. They are. In addition, they share the burden o f all women as politically and economi cally marginalized and socially de valued. Black women were never accord ed the protection and “privileges” of white women in America. There are bitter truth to the old line that the only time black women are ever called ladies is when they are cleaning la dies. Slavery distorted and narrowed the gender lines between black men and women Black women were com modities beaten, worked, raped and abused to boost the profit power and sexual pleasure o f the slavemaster. During the segregation era black women were constant targets o f vio lence Between 18 9 1 and 19 2 1 forty- five black women (known) were lynched, shot, burned or beaten to death by white mobs. Several o f the victims were teenagers. Several were pregnant. When a white mob obliter ated the all-black town on Rosewood, Florida in 1921, black women were the first murdered. Hundreds more were forced to flee in terror. Most black women did not live the mythical Ozzie and Harriet lifestyle ofhousewife, nurturer and caregiver. The majority o f black women were employed outside the home as do mestics, cooks, cleaning and laundry workers, low paid, unskilled work ers in plans, factories, and on the farms. While much o f the media en shrined the stereotypes o f black men as lazy, violent, crime prone, sexual menaces, black women were typed much the same way. The stereotypes were permanently burned into the minds o f many Americans in ads, films, and early sit-coms. In Amos n Andy, Widow Parker was a schem ing gold-digger, greedily on the prowl for man and money. Madam Queen was a sexually loose, con artist. Saphire was shrill, domineering and bossy. Mama was boozy, ignorant, and crude. ¡roadway Books food benefit Broadway Books is pleased to announce that for the fourth con secutive year, we’re designating the first Saturday in December 7 as a benefit for the Northeast Emergen cy Food Bank.
