" T h is k n o w a lso , th a t in the Heaven A Way Out Of No Way B y B ernice P owell J ackson Old black folks used to talk about making a way out o f no way, usually when talking about G od’s pow er to make the impossible possible. Even in these times which seem hopeless, people are still making a way out o f no way. Here are two such stories. The Young Knights Chess M en tor Program in Oakland, CA is only a few months old and is the brainchild o f Gerald Lampkin, a man w ho is a brick mason by trade and a natural - b o rn ro le m o d e l an d m e n to r. Lampkin, who learned to play chess at age 9, realized that chess offered a way to capture the Imagination and minds of Oakland youth. “Once you capture their minds with chess, you can teach basic respect, patience, morals and values,” he explained in a recent interview. Funded by the O akland Park, R ec reation and cultural Affairs D epart ment, this program has m anaged to draw in dozens of young people after school. It teaches them discipline, self-control and how to think for them selves. “It teaches them discipline, self-control and how to think for them selves. “It stops everything else and it makes me exercise may mind. I see myself thinking steps ahead in chess. It’s what I need to do in life. It keeps me out of trouble, "said 17 year-old Philip Johnson, who lives in a hom e less shelter. G erald L am pkin believes that chess is a metaphor for life, which helps students think about their next moves in life, while teaching pa tience and the importance o f consid ering the co n seq u en ces o f their moves. Gerald Lam pkin knows how to make a way out o f no way. Azim Khamisa and Pies Felix, Jr. share that abil ity to make a way out of no way. They were able to reach through their own personal pain to establish the Tariq Khamisa Founda tion in San Diego to seek the causes o f youth violence and find ways to prevent it The miracle o f it is that Tariq Khamisa, the son of Azim, allegedly was murdered by Pleas' grandson. Tariq, a college student who worked as a pizza deliverer at night, was killed by gang members during a robbery. Tony Hicks, F eliz’s grand son, became the first 14 year-old charged under a new California law allowing minors to be tried as adults. “T ony’s family are as much victims in this as mine," said Khamisa. Both Khamisa and Feliz have had an instant course in violence, gangs and youth. "I didn’t know there are 5 0 g an g s in San D ie g o ,” said Khamisa. “Many o f our children, after three o ’clock, they’re left to their own devices. There ’ s a big void there. And our kids fall into it, “said Felix. la st d a y s p e r ilo u s tim e s sh a ll c o m e ” .
