Paint With Confidence Using l ips
From The Pro’s
E v e n th o u g h w in t e r ’ s ic y b la s t
Even the most ardent d o -it-yourselfers
can be in tim id a te d by the prospect o f
painting an entire house. Yet a ll it takes is
the rig ht preparation, the rig h t paint, and
a little enthusiasm.
P ainting te rm in o lo g y can be a little
confusing to a first-tim e painter, but once
y o u ’ve learned a few sim ple d e fin itio ns,
y o u ’ ll be prepping and painting like a pro.
S o shall we begin?
First, how about some o f the basics:
■the term “ sheen” o r “ fin is h ” refers to how
-shiny the paint looks. House paint comes
in four sheens: gloss, satin-gloss, eggshell,
and Hat. G lossier finishes are exception
a lly easy to clean and really make doors
and trim stand out. A fla t fin ish hides sur
face im perfections and is a great choice
jfo r e xte rio r siding.
There are tw o basic types o f house
paint. A lk y d is oil-based, w h ile latex is
water-based. Each has its advantages,
l atex dries faster, doesn’t yellow , and can
be cleaned up w ith soap and water when
y o u break fo r the day. O il penetrates natu
ral wood better and w o n 't stick w hen you
keep y o u r w indow s and doors shut fo r the
w in te r. W h ile you m ig ht want to use an
oil-based paint on w ixxlen doors and w in
d o w trim , latex is a good choice fo r the
h u lk o f the jo b . C le a n -u p ’s q u icke r and
easier, and y o u ’ ll be surprised how soon
y o u can take dow n those wet paint signs.
A q u a lity jo b starts w ith q u a lity paint.
U sing an in fe rio r product w ill eventually
cost you m any tim es the few d o lla rs you
th in k y o u ’re saving.
How Much Paint Do I Need?
age per gallon as listed on the can. The
answer is the num ber o f gallons you need
to buy.
W h ile the m ethod o f preparation d if
fers fro m surface to surface, the one co m
m on d e nom inator is cleanliness. A lw a ys
wash the surface th o ro u g h ly w ith a solu
tio n o f water and a household detergent
before prepping. M ake sure you rem ove
a ll traces o f m ild e w . Then, th o ro u g h ly
rinse o f f y o u r cleaning solution. T h is is
especially im p orta n t w ith protected areas
such as eaves, porch"ceilings, o r the area
underneath a w indow .
