Yet a ll it takes is the rig ht preparation, the rig h t paint, and a little enthusiasm. P ainting te rm in o lo g y can be a little confusing to a first-tim e painter, but once y o u ’ve learned a few sim ple d e fin itio ns, y o u ’ ll be prepping and painting like a pro. S o shall we begin? First, how about some o f the basics: ■the term “ sheen” o r “ fin is h ” refers to how -shiny the paint looks. House paint comes in four sheens: gloss, satin-gloss, eggshell, and Hat. G lossier finishes are exception­ a lly easy to clean and really make doors and trim stand out. A fla t fin ish hides sur­ face im perfections and is a great choice jfo r e xte rio r siding. There are tw o basic types o f house paint. A lk y d is oil-based, w h ile latex is water-based. Each has its advantages, l atex dries faster, doesn’t yellow , and can be cleaned up w ith soap and water when y o u break fo r the day. O il penetrates natu­ ral wood better and w o n 't stick w hen you keep y o u r w indow s and doors shut fo r the w in te r. W h ile you m ig ht want to use an oil-based paint on w ixxlen doors and w in ­ d o w trim , latex is a good choice fo r the h u lk o f the jo b .
