Safe Partying
Y o u ’ve com e to expect it at this
tim e o f year please, w arnings and
tips prom oting "safe and sober" h o li
day celebrations. N ow there’s more
evidence than ever that it’s a good
idea. C onsider these sobering facts:
A new survey o f alcohol use
am ong O regonians show s that one in
10 ad u lts either abuse alcohol or,
w orse, are dependent on it.
R ecent O regon research show s
that chi Idren and adolescents are much
more likely to drink if adults w hom
they respect set an exam ple that it's
okay.
If that doesn’t alarm you, this
might: The O regon Suprem e C ourt
has ruled that, even as the host o f a
party in your own hom e, you can be
held financially liable if a guest b e
com es drunk and then gets into an
accident.
A dd to all o f this that 35 to 40
percent o f O regonians never drink
alcohol, and you can see why being a
good host dictates that you offer non
alcoholic alternatives. For your popu
larity as a host, and for your gu ests’
enjoym ent, rem em ber these tips if you
do serve alcohol:
O ffer a variety of alcohol-free
drinks. Before your party, experim ent
with various recipes and choose ones
that w ill com pete with any alcoholic
beverage.
If you offer - or are offered - an

alcoholic drink, rem em ber that "no
thanks" is as acceptable an answ er as
“thank you."
S erve snacks so guests a re n ’t
drinking on an em pty stom ach. These
snacks w ork well: raw vegetable strips,
light dips and other low -calorie, high-
m oisture foods; m eets, cheeses, eggs
and other high-calorie foods also can
help slow alcohol absorption.
A v o id salty fo o d s th at m ake
people thirstier. In other w ords, if you
w ant people to drink less - d o n ’t
serve salted nuts.
A void carbonated m ixers, w hich
speed alcohol absorption.
M easure drinks w ith a jigger;
d o n ’td o u b le up. Keep alcohol behind
the bar and serve your guests; d o n ’t
encourage guests to help them selves.
Space drinks. The body can safely
absorb only one drink an hour.
Prom ote diversions - talk with
your guests, introduce y o u r guests to
one another, start conversations, offer
gam es that people enjoy.
An hour or so before the party
ends, stop serving alcohol and offer a
snack w ith coffee, tea or other alco
hol-free beverage to dilute the effects
of the alcohol.
If som eone does drink too much,
take responsibility for his or her safety
and for that o f others. D rive the indi
vidual hom e, find a ride or offer a
place to sleep.
