N ow there’s more evidence than ever that it’s a good idea. C onsider these sobering facts: A new survey o f alcohol use am ong O regonians show s that one in 10 ad u lts either abuse alcohol or, w orse, are dependent on it. R ecent O regon research show s that chi Idren and adolescents are much more likely to drink if adults w hom they respect set an exam ple that it's okay. If that doesn’t alarm you, this might: The O regon Suprem e C ourt has ruled that, even as the host o f a party in your own hom e, you can be held financially liable if a guest b e com es drunk and then gets into an accident. A dd to all o f this that 35 to 40 percent o f O regonians never drink alcohol, and you can see why being a good host dictates that you offer non alcoholic alternatives. For your popu larity as a host, and for your gu ests’ enjoym ent, rem em ber these tips if you do serve alcohol: O ffer a variety of alcohol-free drinks. Before your party, experim ent with various recipes and choose ones that w ill com pete with any alcoholic beverage. If you offer - or are offered - an You Spending Too Much? alcoholic drink, rem em ber that "no thanks" is as acceptable an answ er as “thank you." S erve snacks so guests a re n ’t drinking on an em pty stom ach. These snacks w ork well: raw vegetable strips, light dips and other low -calorie, high- m oisture foods; m eets, cheeses, eggs and other high-calorie foods also can help slow alcohol absorption. A v o id salty fo o d s th at m ake people thirstier. In other w ords, if you w ant people to drink less - d o n ’t serve salted nuts. A void carbonated m ixers, w hich speed alcohol absorption. M easure drinks w ith a jigger; d o n ’td o u b le up. Keep alcohol behind the bar and serve your guests; d o n ’t encourage guests to help them selves. Space drinks. The body can safely absorb only one drink an hour. Prom ote diversions - talk with your guests, introduce y o u r guests to one another, start conversations, offer gam es that people enjoy. An hour or so before the party ends, stop serving alcohol and offer a snack w ith coffee, tea or other alco hol-free beverage to dilute the effects of the alcohol. If som eone does drink too much, take responsibility for his or her safety and for that o f others. D rive the indi vidual hom e, find a ride or offer a place to sleep.
