lacks, Jews And Gentiles: Conclusion
ik±KO bJVl< K im . e > B vwt
as my reflections have so far indicat
ed, there is a several-centuries-old
inter-action between the races that
not only produces realistic evalua
tions in the respective groups—but,
in each, a body o f tradition and even
folklore that can yield more truths
than all the scary headlines generat
ed by the media circus'. This lays
the groundwork foi productive dia
logue as opposed to the contempo
rary frame o f reference established
by those submerged in heated debate
over the pronouncements o f M inis
ter Farrakhan.
Several black readers have re
minded me o f comments I made in
these columns almost a decade ago.
In particular I had described a fric
tion at the interface between jewish
theatrical producers, playwrights,
agents, etc. and the African Am eri
can actors, actresses and other per
formers who they packaged, publi
cized and sold to the great American
public; On Broadway, in Hollywood,
on the airwaves and, early-on, the
I his series has brought an inter
esting response from all segments o f
Portland s very diverse population. I
would mention a communication
front a Jewish family informing that
when I write o f ethnic dislocations
by “ Urban Renewal (removal) Pro
grams" I might consider the scatter
ing o f jewish homes, shops and plac
es o f worship by the I960 “South
Auditorium Urban Renewal Project.”
Many ofthe calls I got expressed
concern that I had not yet addressed
the "critical or "momentous” issues
that were "disastrously divisive" in
current Black/Jewish relations. I sup
pose that it is perfectly natural that
each reader would consider the con
cerns upper most in hisor her mind as
the' most critical or momentous.”
My viewpoint, established over a
period o f a lot o f years and through
close social or economic contact at
various times, is something entirely
different.
I think that this is good because,

vaudeville circuit.
The absolute, ethnic “ Kosher
Wall o f Separation” between con
troller and controllee occasionally
produced flareups that were never
reported in the black media as the
Pittsburgh Courier or the Los Ange
les Sentinel newspapers which had
large, widely-read theatrical sections.
I rem ember that several de
cades ago these papers carried a
review o f the book, “ N e gro C a r
a v a n .” In it, the fo llo w in g state
ment was attributed to Katherine
Dunham , fam ous A fric a n A m e r
ican dancer and anthropologist:
“ Frohm an, the famed theatrical
producer coined the sa yin g N e v
er g iv e a n igge r a lin e ’ .” Sin ce
that time, o fc o u rse , many b lacks
have insisted they have found a
sim ila r theme throughout A m e r
ican life. The d en ig ra tin g "A m o s
and A n d y ” s e r ie s (F re e m a n
G osden and C o m p an y) produced
much louder com plaints and even
in the white lib e ral p re ss’ .

In terestin gly, this e arly on
there was not a unified resent
ment o f this low com edy and
m illio n s o f A frica n A m ericans
first, listened to this farce and
later watchetj two white men in
b lack face perform on televisio n
before b la ck s were hired. There is
still bitter resentment at this in many
quarters and we have many blacks
from this generation saying this is
how "we" helped pay to establish
Israel and add Abe Saperstein and
the "Globetrotters” and Norman
Granz and "Jazz at the Philharmon
ic' They say, “ Mo Town” was not
soon enough to be set free.
So we have it that, like those
continental plates rubbing together
in the tectonic process, the relation
ship between Blacks and Jews ebbs
and wanes in cultural tides o f opin
ions and issues - b lo ck s o f d ia
logue tie up like those co n tin en
tal plates, and then are released
in giant spasm s where everyone
lets it a ll hang out.
