nounced that plans are being made
for a Mass march in Birmingham.
The March is scheduled for Septem

Annual National Convention In a
letter to the Congressional Black
C aucus and all civil rights organiza
tions, the Convention’s new Presi

According to Dr. Lyons, Afri
can Americans, have always had to
have the law on their side in order to
achieve any measure of success in
this country. He says, the leadership
in Congress and the U.S. Supreme
Court, is trying to turn the clock
back, to repeal those law» that endure
Africans Americans equal opportu
nity.
Says the new national NBC Pres
ident, “It is timely that we are con
vening in Birmingham, Alabama, the
city which symbolizes the cradle of
the civil rights struggle.
It is the city where Dr. King
wrote his passionate “Letter from a
Birmingham Jail;” the city where
three of our own Baptist children
were killed in the bombing of the
16th Street Baptist Church and the
city where we intend to bring back to
the attention of all Americans the
struggle we must continue and the
dream we must keep alive.” Lyons
also said, “In 1963, Dr. King had a
dream, but, in 1995, we are experi
encing a nightmare!
The National Baptist Conven
tion represents over 8,000,000 peo
ple and more than 30,000 churches.
Over 60,000 are expected in Bir
mingham for the National Conven
tion and over 25,000 plan to march.
