The ; National R.mtkt Baptist C Conven tion, USA, Inc., the nation’s largest African American organization, an­ nounced that plans are being made for a Mass march in Birmingham. The March is scheduled for Septem­ ber 6, 1995 during NBC’s 115th Annual National Convention In a letter to the Congressional Black C aucus and all civil rights organiza­ tions, the Convention’s new Presi­ dent, Dr. Henry J. Lyons said, “The March is being held to show America that Black Americans will not sit back and allow the recent acts of congress and the U.S. Supreme Court to go unchecked!” z . .• — . ... According to Dr. Lyons, Afri­ can Americans, have always had to have the law on their side in order to achieve any measure of success in this country. He says, the leadership in Congress and the U.S. Supreme Court, is trying to turn the clock back, to repeal those law» that endure Africans Americans equal opportu­ nity. Says the new national NBC Pres­ ident, “It is timely that we are con­ vening in Birmingham, Alabama, the city which symbolizes the cradle of the civil rights struggle. It is the city where Dr. King wrote his passionate “Letter from a Birmingham Jail;” the city where three of our own Baptist children were killed in the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church and the city where we intend to bring back to the attention of all Americans the struggle we must continue and the dream we must keep alive.” Lyons also said, “In 1963, Dr. King had a dream, but, in 1995, we are experi­ encing a nightmare! The National Baptist Conven­ tion represents over 8,000,000 peo­ ple and more than 30,000 churches. President Clinton has also been invited to attend. The March will take place on Wednesday, September 6, 1995, at 3:00 PM. It will begin at the Birmingham Civic Center. Marchers will file through the city toward the 16th Street Baptist Church, and end at the Bir­ mingham Civil Rights Park with a speech by president Lyons. From Mississippi, after the death of her parents Carrie Mae Pearsons and Wesley Love, she moved to Portland, Oregon and has prospered for the last thirty-four years. Carrie was a very strong willed woman with a loving personality. She went on to earn a degree in General Studies from Portland Community Col­ lege. Carrie had a lot o f love to give to everyone who had the opportunity of having a relationship with her. She was known throughout the community as “Mae Love’’ and others called her “Momma Love” and her grandchildren remember her as “Grammy”. But, most o f all she will be remembered and missed for her bright smile and glowing personality.
