Life Saving Skills
Taught
The Red C ross offers a course to learn
life saving skills for adults, children or
infants who stop breathing or w ho are
choking. T he Com m unity CPR class will

Astrological Fair
Coming
A strology will be celebrated during
an O regon A strological A ssociation fair,
June 11 from 10 a m. to 5 p.m. at M ont­
gom ery Park in northw est Portland. The
event is free, but professional astrologers
will charge for consultations.
Observatory
Opens Summer
Season
C lose up views o f the stars, planets,
galaxies and other celestial objects can be
seen Friday and Saturday nights through
S eptem ber at the University o f O regon’s
Pine M ountain O bservatory near M illican

Mexico’s Masters
On Display
The Littman G allery in the Smith C en­
ter at Portland State U niversity is one o f
only three places in the United States cho­
sen to present “T hree G enerations o f M ex­
ican M asters," 62 art w orks from som e o f
the m ost highly regarded artists o f M exico.
The exhibit will be on view during the
m onth o f June. Call 725-5656 for gallery

Gardening
Workshops Set
Home gardening can be greener thanks
to alternatives to pesticides w orkshops of­
fered in June by M etro and Portland’s
Bureau o f E nvironm ental Services. The
w orkshops focus on controlling insects,
w eeds and diseases with a strategy that
em phasizes good gardening techniques,
prevention and non-toxic or least-toxic
controls.

Lisa Anfield
Anfield is believed to be the first Afri­
can American to receive the honor in the
Portland school’s history. St. M ary’s A cade­
my was founded in 1859 and is one c f the top |
college preparatory schools in the nation.
Anfield will attend Stanford Universi-I
ty in the fall. She is looking forw ard to a
I career in health sciences.

al Merit Corp. She also won a scholarship
from the Portland alum ni chapter o f the

She has been active in the drama depart-

er o f the I hespian Society, vice president o f
the National Honor Society and a member o f
the Marian Singers and Dancers.
She was selected to participate in the

Anfield says her inspiration comes from
her strong b elief in G od and the support o f
a loving, close knit family. She is the daugh­
ter to Paul and A lice W atson and the g rand­
daughter o f Bessie L. Anfield.

G ates, an editor, scholar, w riter and
proponent o f A frican-A m erican studies, is
chairm an o f the A frican-A m erican studies
departm ent at H arvard University.
He has described h im self as a “ literary
archaeologist,” a pursuit that began with
discovery o f one o f the earliest novels p u b ­
lished by a black person in the U nited States.
“O ur N ig,” w ritten in 1859 by H arriet
E. W ilson was reprinted by Random House
in 1983.

PIVOT Graduation Surprise
Students graduating from PIVOT, a com ­
prehensive jo b training program for parent­
ing teens m oving from w elfare to work, at­
tended a surprise lim o-luncheon on T hurs­
day, June 1, 1995, at The C harthouse Restau­
rant, 5700 S. W. T erw illiger Blvd.
“T hese graduates have worked hard to
prepare for the w orld o f w ork.” says Anna
Street, Program D irector “This luncheon
and graduation arc designed to be very spe­
cial and the luncheon place is alw ays a sur­
prise!”

Up to 100 students, age 10 to 17, have
the opportunity to com plete a 3 week w ork­
shop in July and then audition for the Theatre
in Da Hood student theatre com pany, which
will perform “Class Struggle” in August.
I he play was especially written for the
student theater com pany by Portland play­
wright and singer M ario DePriest.
Registration is taking place now for the
July 10 through July 28 workshops.
T eaching the sessions will be several
national and local professional theatrical,
visual and m usical artists.
In addition to D ePriest, they include
Mary Thorton, a director and instructor from
C ultural O dyssey in San Francisco, Akbar
D ePriest, a renow ned ja z z artist in Portland,
A d rie n C ru z , a n a tio n a lly re c o g n iz e d
quiltm aker, and Anna M. Rodgers, a multi
m edia artist from southern California.

Inez Amado Joins Trail Blazers
The Portland Trail B lazers have named
Inez A m ado to their m edia services and com ­
munity affairs team as com m un ¡cations co o r­
dinator.
She jo in s the B lazers from the M uscular
Dystrophy A ssociation w here she served as
their program coordinator since 1993. Prior
to that, she served eight years at KG W -TV as
public relations associate/events coordinator
and was a sales/prom otions assistant at K UPL
radio.

In her new position, A m ado will assist in
coordinating com m unity and sponsor-relat­
ed activities, as well as team appearances and
events.
A m ado attended the U niversity ofSouth-
ern C alifornia w here she holds a Bachelor o f
Science degree in humanities.

This year 2096 students petitioned for
degrees, high school diplom as, G ED certif­
icates and one-year certificates - the largest
graduating class to date.
The student speaker is W illiam Van
Riper, who plans to be a high school math
teacher, is blind and he delivered his ad ­
dress at the podium w ith his guide dog Alec,
Saturday, June 3, at the A rlene Schnitzer
Concert Hall
A record 603 students participated in
the cerem ony this year. C om m unity College
