Gardening Workshops Set Home gardening can be greener thanks to alternatives to pesticides w orkshops of­ fered in June by M etro and Portland’s Bureau o f E nvironm ental Services. The w orkshops focus on controlling insects, w eeds and diseases with a strategy that em phasizes good gardening techniques, prevention and non-toxic or least-toxic controls. Lisa Anfield Anfield is believed to be the first Afri­ can American to receive the honor in the Portland school’s history. He has described h im self as a “ literary archaeologist,” a pursuit that began with discovery o f one o f the earliest novels p u b ­ lished by a black person in the U nited States. “O ur N ig,” w ritten in 1859 by H arriet E. T eaching the sessions will be several national and local professional theatrical, visual and m usical artists. Inez Amado Joins Trail Blazers The Portland Trail B lazers have named Inez A m ado to their m edia services and com ­ munity affairs team as com m un ¡cations co o r­ dinator. She jo in s the B lazers from the M uscular Dystrophy A ssociation w here she served as their program coordinator since 1993. Prior to that, she served eight years at KG W -TV as public relations associate/events coordinator and was a sales/prom otions assistant at K UPL radio. ( In her new position, A m ado will assist in coordinating com m unity and sponsor-relat­ ed activities, as well as team appearances and events.
