some may be too afraid to do, she
has started her own business.
In January, Mary' opened the
doors o f the Cascade Business Cen
ter at Cascade Plaza, with the help
o f the Oregon Association o f M i
nority Entrepreneurs.
The business offers office man
agement services, including photo
copies, computer rental, records

nesses, home based businesses, stu
dents, non-profit organizations and
the general community.
The focus is on "flexibility, per
sonal attention and catering to indi
vidual needs,” she said.
The center is conveniently lo
cated at 4134 N . Vancouver, an area
abundant w ith businesses yet scarce
on business and office services.
Starting one’s own business can
be risky and takes courage.
Come see what Cascade Busi
ness Center can do for you, as w e al I

"Loser-Pays, Tort Reform, Lia

monstrous intrusion upon state laws

A m erica's citizens, the Republican
push for this legislation exhibits the
depth o f depravity to which both old
and neophyte politicians have sunk -
- trying to build banks o f deep-pock
et, corporate campaign contributors
for future elections (yesterday the
little rascals wanted money, power
and clout returned to the states. Now,
they want a "nation-wide” federal
cap on awards in civil suits).
The grand rush to limit the
amount o f damages which an injured
party may recover at law - either
actual or for pain and suffering - will
no doubt be accelerated by the recent
national exposure o f two horrendous
'accidents' at a Florida hospital. First,
a man has the wrong leg amputated;
a week later, the very same facility'
kills a patient by ‘mistakenly’ re
moving his breathing apparatus. The
house measure which for the first
time set limits in “All o f The Nations
Courts” on damages awarded in all
civil lawsuits is being enthusiastical
ly backed by many associations and
industries.
S u p e r-in te n se lo b bying, o f

along with physicians and pharma
ceutical companies have succeeded
in being gadded to the house bill
The American Medical Association
is spending millions on radio and
newspaper advertisements. Are they
afraid that the public will forget the
deliberate and deadly withholding
o f known facts concerning Asbes

plants? Deadly Hamburgers?
1 hope we are not fooled by a
few highly-publicized examples of
excessive damages like the recent
million-dollar hot coffee incident.
In concert with these attacks upon
the publics right to fair and just
compensation for injury , loss o f in
come and for pain and suffering, we
have parallel assaults upon the Food
And Drug Administration (FDA)
by the pharmaceutical companies.
If, two decades ago, the FDA had
been crippled as the Republicans
with, they would have approved the
drug Tham alom ide and here in
America, we too would have had
the many thousands o f horribly de
formed babies as in Europe.
No, our system o f law is not
perfect but it is so superior to that in
the rest o f the world that even a fool
(or Republican) should think twice
before arrogantly tamper with it.
Nothing said here should be taken
as blanket endorsement o f Demo
crats; they have their rascals too,
many o f the weaker ones joining the
right wing assault. Batman and Rob

ANSWERS
1. (c) is correct. Although a 50-50
mixture protects to -34°F, you're
safe to -85°F with a 70% solution
(30% water). Car Care Council
w arns not to use any higher
percentage of antifreeze because
you'll actually get less protection
2. (b) is correct. Moisture,- a
conductor of electrical current, can
do weird things to the electrical and
ignition systems. Among other
things, it can short out one or more
of the spark plugs by diverting the
current.
3. All three arc correct, (a) The
heater derives its heat from the
engine cooling system, a cold
running engine results in an
uncomfortable car in the winter. It
also means poor fuel economy and,
eventually, increased w ear o f
internal engine parts (b) A
m alfunctioning air flow valve
allows cold air to mix with heated
air. (c) Similar discomfort results
from a faulty valve that controls
coolant flow to the heater
