Nor will the elim ination of fe d era l fu n d s for the P ublic Correct Number For Albina Youth Fund 60-Year-0ld Begins March Against Hunger A year-long cross-country trek to promote the work o f food banks and publicize the problems of hun ger and poverty began Thursday at the Oregon Food Bank in north east Portland. “Food banks do a lot of good, and 1 want to get that message out to the public,” said March. He started the journey on his 60th birthday after arriving in Port land by bus from Cadillac, Mich., where he worked at a food bank for three years. He plans to return to the Oregon Food Bank next year for 61st birthday. Wherever he stops, March says, he will promote hunger-re lief agencies that belong to Chica go-based Second Harvest, a na ing won the most football games during regular season play. At each stop, March will ask people to donate to their local food banks one cent for every mile he walks or as much as they want to pledge. Benge, 26, a Port land police officer, was arrested last week on 11 criminal counts alleging possession and distribution of Mar ijuana, official misconduct, forgery, theft, and tampering with public records. Two civilians were also ar rested in connection with the inves tigation. These indictments followed an investigation by members ofthe Port land Police Bureau. The District At torney’s Office, and the Federal Bu reau of Investigation. Benge was lodged at the Justice Center Jail with bail set at $227,500. The investigation began about six weeks ago after a citizen contact ed the Portland Police Bureau with information about possible criminal conduct by a Portland Police officer. Portland Police detectives and Drug and Vice Division officers, assisted by the District Attorney s Office and the Portland F.B.I. of fice. conducted an extensive inves tigation which centered on allega tions that Benge was involved, with two citizens, in the distribution of marijuana he seized in connection with his duties while on duty as a uniform patrol officer. During the investigation, exten sive surveillance was conducted, and investigators exam ined a large amount of police reports and auditecj evidence records in the course of their inquiry into the allegations. The results of that comprehen sive investigation were presented to a Multnomah County Grand Jury, who returned the indictments earlier this week. The indictments allege that Benge seized marijuana from sus pects in the course of his police du ties, falsified reports relating to the seizures, than kept the marijuana. Further it is alleged that Benge and the two other citizens, Michael and Terri May, conspired to, and later did possess and distribute the mari juana. Benge has been relieved of all police responsibilities and authority. The suspension, by law, is with pay pending internal disciplinary proce dures.
