D ecember 2 8 , 19 9 4 • T he P ortland O bserver P age B4 Relations Sought With Cuba The Board o f Directors o f Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon has adopted a resolution concerning the U.S. relationship to Cuba. The Rev. Dr Phil Harder, Chair of the ministries' Refugee, Immigratvons and International Ministries Commission, asserts, “ In a situation similar to the on-going life ofChrist’s church in East Europe and Russia before the destruction o f the Berlin Wall, the life o f the church in Cuba has remained alive. We feel it is time for the U.S. to initiate negotiations with Cuba to remove the Caribbean Wall and let trade and travel grow between our countries.” “We are gratified that the Board of Directors of EMO has joined the grow ing chorus of people and organizations across the U.S. — both left and right, church and non-church - in asking our government to normal ize relations with Cuba and to reevaluate U.S. policy, which seems counter-productive for both Cuba and the U .S ,” stated Tom Hansen, Regional Director of Pastors for Peace in Cuba of Minneapolis, Minne sota. 'cticmate f ’esvmica Veronica is a lovely child with considerable potential and much to offer an adoptive family. This affec tionate 9-year-old has a happy dispo sition and is an excellent student with advanced reading abilities and ex pressive language skills. Veronica has never experienced the permanency o f a stable, loving family, and her self-esteem is very low. As a young toddler, Veronica and her older sister were abandoned by their birth mom due to chronic parental substance abuse. An aunt in the extended family became their guardian until 1991, when she was no longer able to care for them. Two subsequent, foster placements dis rupted amidst evidence of abuse. Veronica has been living in a group treatment center, where she has made wonderful progress in ad dressing her feelings of grief, her fears o f abandonment, and her frag ile ability to trust. She is now ready for her own permanent family. Veron ica very much wants to be part of an African American or a bi-racial fam ily Veronica’s sister is being adopt ed by a family in western Washing ton, and it will be important for the girls to have the opportunity for con tact with one another as they grow up. ■ fi Ss • » ■ * Z. R ew fear’s Day Concert . r M attie Ann C allier-S pears, daughter o f Edward and O livia C allier, was born April 6, 1944 in New O rleans, Louisiana. She was the m other o f four children; U lf Hansson Von Spears, Velma M a ria S p e a r s - P e n n , E ric k D ’am on S p e a rs a n d D e ric k LeM ont Spears. She had also been blessed with four grandchil d re n ; D io n te J o v o n S p e a rs , S o lo m o n N a th a n ie l S p e a rs , C h ris tia n L am o n t P enn and A dreanna O livia Spears. She is also succeeded by three brothers and three sisters: Brothers, William Elliot, Ronald George and Ricky Lovell. Sisters, Geraldine Eliziabeth Hammond, Gwendolyn Lorraine and Maryetta Delisa. And a host o f nieces and nephews. M attie began singing at the early age o f 6 years old and at the age o f 16, becam e the first “N e gro” to jo in the T ri-M usic M as ters Society in P ortland, Oregon. Her singing career was well on its way and M attie received many rem arkable accolades by the time she graduated from high school. One notable accom plishm ent was her being recognized as the first black (in the South) to sing for the launching o f a large ocean vessel from the Amy Lykes Lines at A vondale M arineway. Following high school, Mattie was accepted to Xavier University where she would major in Voice and minor in Strings. It was there that Mattie began writing and became a The American Jewish Congress has released a letter from Ralph E. During my entire tenure at this organization, I have never made a comment that even member o f the Creative Writers Guild. Since then, Mattie has studied with the Portland Opera Associa tion, under Mrs. Dorothy Fisher- Jones, Mr. Gibner King and tutored by Mrs. Gloria Cutsforth; notable Theme:“Jesus Is The Center O f M y Joy" fea tu rin g ■, . • zf; « •; remotely resembled that which has falsely been attributed to me.” Reed added, “1 hope that this clarifies my view on this very important issue.” Baum had asked for Reed’s clar ification follow ing a meeting between Jewish and evangelical leaders in Washington on November 29 in which Reed offered views that con tradicted the remarks attributed to him in the Journal story. Olivet’s newslet ter). Her civic activities included: Le Femmes D ebutante and C av a lier Society, N ational C ouncil o f N egro W omen, NAACP, A frican A m erican F estival A ssociation (Exec. Secretary, American B usi ness W om en, F .l.T .S . P riso n M inistry, E ditor for the Religion section o f The Portland O bserver and N orthw est A frican A m eri can W riters W orkshop. These activities and her demands to sing kept Mattie busy.
