Insulation is often the first and most important step in weatherizing your home. According to The Sunset Home Energy Book, close to 60% of the energy needed to heat your home in the winter escapes through parts of the house than can be insulated - the walls, ceiling and floor. Insulation works by trapping small pockets of air as buffers be tween warm and cold zones inside and outside your house - the same way clothes keep you warm by trap ping a layer of air between you and your shirt or sweater. Insulation is measured by its “R-value” — its resis tance to heat flow. -| smoke detector. “It’s a fact. Smoke detectors save lives,” said Panuccio. “For your life safety - and your fam ily’s - test your detectors, vacuum out the cobwebs and dust and replace the batteries.” The state fire marshal recom mends placing a smoke detector on every level o f your home, outside each sleeping area and in each bed room.
