South Africa To Pursue Agreement With Peace Corps President Clinton and South African President Nelson Mandela have announced plans to develop a Peace Corps program in the Republic of South Africa. Both parties look forward to signing a formal country agreement in the near future, and will work together to develop relevant and effective Peace Corps programs and volunteer assignments. “This is a harbinger of good things to come. We will now work jointly with the South African Government to determine their needs and how we can best help," said Peace Corps Director Carol Bellamy. Peace Corps volunteers could arrive in South Africa as early as January 1996 and will likely work in areas such as education, water sanitation, rural health care, and youth development. The Peace Corps has entered or reentered 33 countries in the past five years, including the former Soviet Union and China. "This is a very exciting development. President Mandela and the new democracy in South Africa have been an inspiration to the whole world. We expect public interest to be extremely high,” said Bellamy. Since 1961, over 140.000 volunteers have served in all corners of the world. Today, over 6.500 volunteers, a fifteen year high, serve in 93 countries in education, health and nutrition, economic development, environment, agriculture, water and sanitation, and urban and youth development. A review o f the tac ticsand strategies used by successful people as well as conversations with motivation experts suggest the follow ing principles should be incorporated into your life, regardless of age, educa tion or income. Clear Goals. You must clearly and precisely know what it is you want to achieve. This is the only w ay to live an organized and purposeful life. W ith out clear goals which act to give pur pose to our lives, we will tend to lack focus, fall easy prey to procrastination and be controlled by events instead of controlling them. In addition, your goals should be written down and they must be goals to which you arc truly committed. A S p ec ific P la n . Not only m ust a person know w hat he or she w ants out o f life, they m ust also develop a specific plan for accom plishing the stated goals. A gain, this plan m ust be reduced to w riting and state sp e cific steps you will take each day to bring you closer to your goals. C onsistentAction.Q nc thing vir tually all experts agree upon is that no goal or plan is worth a damn if they are not followed up with action. The key is consistent action. As one motivational speaker puts it Itisnotw hatw edoonce in a while that determines the course o f our lives, it is what we do consistently that matters most. ” Construe live, goal- oriented actions m ust become a habit M a ke Decisions. A m ajor reason most people do not make the most o f their lives is simply because they never m ake up their minds to do so. They delay importantdecisions out offear. It may be fear o f failure, fear o f em bar rassm ent fear o f disapproval by others or fear o f the difficulty associated with the task. But you arc not going to achieve anything until you first make a decision. E n g a g e In R a tio n a l E xp e ri m entation. You w illnotalw aysknow exactly w hat to do. But you m ust do som ething. But often we fail to realize how power ful it can be. W hat you think and how you think about it can literally trans form your life. Always remember this: How a person feels at a particular mo ment ismostlydeterminedby what they are thinking about at that m om ent If you are thinking negatively, you will feel negative. Worries, fears and anxi eties must be confronted. Problems arc not to be worried about, they are to be solved. Thus, you should always think in a solution-oriented way.
