A Perfectly Silent Protest: No
Candles, No Sounds,
No Sermons, No Music,
No Speeches...
T hat’s w hat organizers hope to
achieve by attracting people to a pro
test service, o f sorts, a church filled
with silent men and women, praying,
m editating, or simply sitting.

Friends Service Com m ission (AFSC)
and People o f Faith Against Bigotry
(POFAB), are sponsoring this ecu
m enical evening to protest ballot ini
tiatives subm itted by the O regon
C itizen’s A lliance, denying hom o
sexuals basic civil rights protection.
This event will take place at the First
C ongregational Church, 1126 S. W.
Park, Portland, Tuesday, A pril 26,
between 5-9 PM to support civil equal
ity for all Oregonians, including gays
and lesbians.
“W e want people to drop in after
work, on the way home. It doesn’t
m atter if they stay fifteen minutes or
for the full four hours,” Ms. Francis
says. “This is not a gay and lesbian
idea; we especially want heterosexual
people who believe that equal rights
for all O regonians is an idea we must
protect.”
Ms. Francis approached AFSC
and POFAB because she believes that
all men and all w om en are equal and
that truly religious feelings lead to
increased love and tolerance, not re
jection o f o n e’s neighbor.
W hy silence?
“W hen confronted with Pilate’s
evil, Jesus rem ained silent. W e are
required to act, but no necessarily to
speak. G handi and M artin Luther
King often walked quietly”.
“Silence can be very pow erful,”
Ms. Francis says.
The event is free, but contribu
tions are welcome. R efreshm ents will
be served.

In addition to the satisfaction
that com es from sharing the A m eri

advantage by having a student live in
their hom e who w ishes to share their

a “ special piece o f w ork,” you are
noble in reason, infinite in faculties,
you are expressive and adm iral in
form, you are like an angel in action,
like a God in apprehension.
You have been told by my best
m inisters that you are “T he Salt O f
The Earth”. You were given the “se
cret” even o f moving m ountains o f
fear and doubt, and o f how to perform
the impossible task o f choosing the
right road.
Y ou believed no one .Y ou burned
your map to happiness, then you aban
doned your snuffed out the candles
that had been placed along your des
tined path o f glory, then you stumbled-
- lo s t and frightened in the darkness
o f hopelessness and self-pity, until
you finally fell mto a hell o f “your
ow n” creation. Then, as now you
cried and beat your breast, and curse
the luck that had and supposedly has
befallen you.
You refuse to accept the conse
quences o f your own petty thoughts
and lazy deed. And you search for a
scapegoat upon which to blam e your
failure... How quickly you found one.
You blamed me!!! You cry that your
handicap, your troubles, your m edi
ocrity, your lack of opportunity, and
your failure-w ere the will o f God.
Then you wallow in i t ...
You are wrong! N ever in all the
seventy billion hum ans w ho have
walked this planet since the begin
ning o f time has there been “anyone”
exactly like you... Never, until the end
o f time will there be another such as
you..
More to come...

your own wants, or the wants o f your
partner or mate?
How can you be a miracle, when
you are shackled down by unneces
sary debts, then you lie aw ake in
torment over whence will come money
for tom orrow ’s high?
Enough! The milk that is spilled,
is lost and it sours. Yet, how many
prophets, how many very wise people,
right in your midst, m any o f whom
you personally dislike or ignore: How
many poets, how many artists, com
posers, scientists, and modern-day
messengers have I sent to you, with
words o f your “divinity” . Y ourpoten-
tial to act godly, and if you would
receive them, the secrets o f how to
achieve things in life.
Yet, how did you treat them?
How do you treat them today, right
now?
W hat do you really want? and
from whom? Still - I love you, and I
am with you now, through these words,
to fulfil the prophet who announced
that “the lord shall set his hand again,
the second tim e” to recover the rem
nant, or the outcast, or ignored, or
abused o f his people.. I have set my
hand again. This is the second time.
You are my remnant..
Is it o f no avail, or o f no sense to
ask, haven ’ t you known? Haven ’ t you
yet heard? H asn’t it been told to you
from the beginning?: H aven’t you
understood from the foundations of the
earth? You have not known: You have
not heard; you have not understood.
You have been told that you a
divinity in disguise, a God playing a
fool. You have been told that you are
