P age B7 T he P ortland O bserver • A pril 13, 1994 A Perfectly Silent Protest: No Candles, No Sounds, No Sermons, No Music, No Speeches... T hat’s w hat organizers hope to achieve by attracting people to a pro test service, o f sorts, a church filled with silent men and women, praying, m editating, or simply sitting. T h e o r g a n iz e r s , A m e ric a n Friends Service Com m ission (AFSC) and People o f Faith Against Bigotry (POFAB), are sponsoring this ecu m enical evening to protest ballot ini tiatives subm itted by the O regon C itizen’s A lliance, denying hom o sexuals basic civil rights protection. This event will take place at the First C ongregational Church, 1126 S. W. Park, Portland, Tuesday, A pril 26, between 5-9 PM to support civil equal ity for all Oregonians, including gays and lesbians. “W e want people to drop in after work, on the way home. It doesn’t m atter if they stay fifteen minutes or for the full four hours,” Ms. Francis says. “This is not a gay and lesbian idea; we especially want heterosexual people who believe that equal rights for all O regonians is an idea we must protect.” Ms. Francis approached AFSC and POFAB because she believes that all men and all w om en are equal and that truly religious feelings lead to increased love and tolerance, not re jection o f o n e’s neighbor. W hy silence? “W hen confronted with Pilate’s evil, Jesus rem ained silent. W e are required to act, but no necessarily to speak. G handi and M artin Luther King often walked quietly”. “Silence can be very pow erful,” Ms. Francis says. The event is free, but contribu tions are welcome. R efreshm ents will be served.
