The kicker is, how are we going to pay fo r it, since no funding was included w ith the charter recommendation. As a council member Ed opposed the building o f the W ilsonvillc Solid Waste Trans fer Statio that would have cost the voters $45 m illio n dollars over the twenty-year life o f the station, plus an additional $4/month increase in their garbage b ill. Ed also voted to reduce the M etro budget by $9 m illio n dollars for the budget year. 1993-94. Ed was instrumental in Ed Washington getting an ordinance through the council to address the issue o f m inority marketing in the region, a first step in bringing more m inority and women’ s conventions to the Portland area. Ed believes that the single most impor- tion fo r them. Ed is a firm believer that we must save as much o f our natural areas as we can for future generations. It is im portant that we fin d some way to fund the Green Spaces program. M etro must continue to w ork w ith its partners in the region in managing the urban growth bound ary so we have orderly rather than chaotic growth. W e must make sure in the continual planning o f transportation that there is a place for mass transit, bikes, autos, and pedestrians. Ed has been w orking w ith local as w ell as federal agencies to find ways to do restoration work on the Colum bia Slough using high school students to do the restoration work. He feels this is an excellent opportunity to intro duce young people to environmental projects as w ell as provide some short term em ploy ment opportunities.
