With That’s Right! his fourth
album for Blue Note, Benny Green
delves deep into the history of jazz
trio. “I have listened to many classic
trios,” he explains, “as an enthusiast,
as a fan. For this project 1 wanted to
hear how various leaders use three
instruments to achieve musical pic
tures. I listened to Nat Cole, Oscar
[Peterson] and Ahmad [Jamal]. All
had significant trios that continued
the guitar and bass format, though
Oscar and Ahmad switched from
guitar to drums between 1957 and
1958.
“I researched and listened for
study and pleasure, for simplicity and
groove -- Red Garland with Paul
Chambers and Arthur Taylor and
Gene Harris with his Three sounds. I
listened to their record with a new
perspective, to discover the inner
workings of the bands, to understand
their chemistry. Gradually 1 began
simplify ing the arrangements for bass
and drums in my own band to give

Rides are free on Tri-Met buses
Blakey, Freddie Hubbard, Betty Carter
and Ray Brown.
“One lesson Ray taught me early
on,” he remembers, “was that 1 was
invited to join his group because he
wanted my personality and not a re
creation of any previous players. He
wanted me to interpret the music
based on my sound. That’s a vital
thing to know because it gives you the
encouragement to seek your own
voice. That’s what I want from my
bandmates, from myself.”
Benny Green will be appearing
at the First Jazz’ 94 sponsored by The
Jazz Society of Oregon at Atwater’s
Lounge-U.S. Bank Tower, 111 S. W.

more breathing room, more opportu
nity for interpretation. My sugges
tions to them became minimal, which
meant to me that we were building
toward developing into a fully inte
grated trio. Thai’s what w'e’ve got
here.”
Excellence, and die refinement
of craft, have always been on Green’s
mind. Throughout his tenure at Blue
Note, covering the albums Lineage,
Greens, Testifyin’! Live at the Vil
lage Vanguard and now That’s Right!,
the 30 year-old pianist has exhibited
a powerful urge to uphold jazz’s great
traditions while lending his own name
to the jazz history books. It’s a per
spective he learned from a host of
caring employers, among them Art
