For this project 1 wanted to hear how various leaders use three instruments to achieve musical pic­ tures. I listened to Nat Cole, Oscar [Peterson] and Ahmad [Jamal]. All had significant trios that continued the guitar and bass format, though Oscar and Ahmad switched from guitar to drums between 1957 and 1958. “I researched and listened for study and pleasure, for simplicity and groove -- Red Garland with Paul Chambers and Arthur Taylor and Gene Harris with his Three sounds. I listened to their record with a new perspective, to discover the inner workings of the bands, to understand their chemistry.
