W e (N ation o f Islam ) held our Pass S aviours’ Day convention in L.A . on O ct. 9,1993 to celebrate a New Day in L os A ngeles. T he Hon. Louis F arrakahn, w ho d e livered the m ain address, spoke on healing the w ounds. A subject appro priate for the dow n and o u t black com m unities and appropriate for the world, for humanity is w ounded. Heal ing the w ounds o f people is a hard job. H ealing the w ounds is like the resur rection o f the dead or, at least a very im portant part o f the resurrection o f the dead. “G o d ’s aim has alw ays been the healing o f w ounds. W ounds that have been created from deviation from the path o f correctness. T he Bloods and the C rips w ant peace. B ut there can be no peace w ithout subm ission to the w ill o f alm ighty A llah (G od). I am asking the B loods and C rips, and all so-called street gangs, if you w ant peace with one another, start first by m aking peace w ith A llah (G od) be cause the people w hom you have pul to death in ignorance arc the people o f G od. The peace c a n ’t be m ade with one another before peace is m ade with G od because it is He w hom we have offended.” T he above w ords are some o f the w ords that the Hon. Louis F arrakhan delivered on that historic day in L.A . C alifornia. Scareface, a rapper from T exas, said that, “ A in ’t no set trippin cause w e all c o o l” This is real. T he truce is no joke. I, along w ith others, believe that ultim ately the so-called gangs w ill serve in the liberation o f the o p p ressed black people in A m erica. Just IM A G IN E black com m unities across A m erica w here the so-called gangs police our neighborhoods, protect our w om en and rid us o f dope dealers. T his will happen! Is there any group o f people in North A m erica other than the N ation o f Islam that attracts 16,000 and m ore to conventions in many m ajor cities in A m erica than the N ation o f Islam ? No! New Feature Added To 1RS Phone Service G ettin g federal tax questions answ ered by the 1RS m ay be a little easier for O regonians this filing sea son. T he 1RS toll-free telephone tax inform ation ce n te r in Portland is sw itching to a system w hich features autom ated call routing, according to 1RS T axpayer Service Division C hief Jane K eating-Jones. The system w ent on line M onday, O ctober 25. “T his system allow s callers with a touch-tone telephone to be ‘self- d ire c te d ’ to the inform ation they need,” says K eating-Jones. C allers using rotary phones w ill have their calls m anually routed by an 1RS w orker. T he new phone system is sim ilar to those used by departm ent store, banks, and som e heath insur ance providers. “T he new system has an auto m ated response unit, so callers, can select from recorded menu choices, including a series o f tax law topics, account-related or notice issues, or refund inquiries,” she explained. Social To Fiscal Crisis: Education And Employment A ssociated O regon Industries (A O I) has a 25-year plus history o f lobbying for, and developing plans to stabilize school funding in O regon. W e did not w ait for the urgency cre ated by the passage o f M easure 5 to take action. “W e were seeking stable funding as early as 1967 and w e have taken positions o f support on seven o f the previous eight sales taxes placed before the O regon electorate. In early 1993, A O I and the O r egon B usinessC ouncildeveloped and adopted the Ten Principles for Fiscal R eform and agreed to evaluate tax reform , proposals based on them . The principles acknow ledge the need for fiscal reform and provide a practical fram ew ork for tax reform that is eco nom ically sound and education re form that m akes o u r schools interna tionally com petitive. T he principles include elim inating tax burden shifts and continuing governm ent efficien cies. Both groups share this com m on Meeting The Needs Of Difficult And Unusual Children base for fiscal reform . So w hat is the reason A O I has chosen to not support this sales tax? A O I has a long-range stake, not only in O regon schools, but in O r egon. W e w ill not settle for a proposal that is “ all w e’ve g o t” w hen it com es to fiscal reform o r the education o f our youth. O ur state and our children deserve better. O re g o n c o u ld h av e th e b est funded school system in the nation. B ut then w hat? W here w ill those young people go for jobs? We believe those young people w ant to stay in O regon and w ill, if they are finan cially secure. W e believe that funding educa tion and preserving governm ent ser vices, and a strong, healthy private sector are inter-dependent. O u r citi zens need both quality education and quality work. W ithout work in the private sector, citizens ca n ’t pay for the necessary services o f the public JF K ,L A X ,O ’Hare....PDX! P ort land International A irport handles more than 7 m illion passengers an n u ally ; projections for the next 10 to 20 years indicate it should be prepared to handle 15million by 2010. With Phase I o f the Port o f P o rtlan d ’s $111 m il lio n T e rm in a l E x p a n sio n N o rth Project now com plete. Phase II is now well underway. Electrical Construction Com pany (E.C.) recently was aw arded the elec trical contract for Phase II. H andling co nstruction for the $25 m illion, 300,000 labor hour, 150,000 square foot, project is Baugh C onstruction Oregon, Inc. Phase II, w hich began in A ugust o f 1993, constructs a new Concourse D. The new concourse extends from theglass-enclosed north lobby o f the airport to the recently com pleted D elta A ir Lines interna tional term inal. Phase II is due for com pletion in early 1995. Baugh P roject M anager, Ross V rom an, explained, “T his is a m as sive p roject~ the system s E.C. will be responsible for in Phase II are “k ey ” to som e o f the m ost im portant func tions o f the airp o rt.” C hallenges include installation o f one o f the m ost advanced, security, fire alarm and paging system s in ex istence in the country. Steve Steller, E.C. C onstruction S uperintendent, explained, “T he entrance control se curity system E.C. will provide and control all entry w ays and levels of access to the new C oncourse D. The solution to stable school fund ing in O regon will consider both pri vate and public sector needs. It will both educate and em ploy. The sales tax m easure destined for the N ovem ber ballot does nothing to provide job grow th, econom ic stability or, par ticularly, the ever scarce, family-wage job. It is our hope that those who have chosen to support this referral will respect the right o f the m em bers of A ssociated O regon industries who disagree. Polling indicates very little public support for it, and if it fails in Novem ber, we will need each other. W e will need to respect differences and com e together once again to d e bate and find a solution. No matter how much we disagree on this par ticular sales tax referral, w e all agree upon one thing, som ething must be done for our children and our state.
