tion o f American dance works includes two

New York choreographer Donald Byrd and
Portland choreographer M in h Tran, plus the

Dennis Spaight’ s poetic Grauenliehe und Leben.
Opening the program is Paul Taylor’ s
Cloven Kingdom, which is considered a comic
gem o f the modem repertoire and is set to music
by Arcangelo Corelli, Henry Cow ell and M alloy
M ille r According to Mr. Taylor, one o f the
world s most influential, modem choreogra
phers, Cloven Kingdom-premiered by the Paul
Taylor Company in 1976-portrays man as a
social animal, contrasting the elegant dance o f
a social ball w ith that o f prim itive movement.
The work, performed at a fast pace, features
tuxedo-clad men, and women in long, flowing
skirts adorned w ith other worldly, mirrored
head pieces.
Continuing in the contemporary dance
mode, OBT w ill present the world premiere o f
M inh Tran's Uncharted Territories, set to an
epic score by Dale Svart. M r. T ran’s choreog
raphy emphasizes the value he place on diver
sity and reflects his early life experiences grow
ing up in Vietnam including the physical and
emotional cost o f the Vietnam War, the peace
he desire, and the freedom he now enjoys.
Uncharted Territories represents the first
work he has choreographed for a ballet com
pany.
