Sponsored by P h ilip M orris Companies Inc., this year’ s presenta­ tion o f American dance works includes two world premieres by internationally renowned New York choreographer Donald Byrd and Portland choreographer M in h Tran, plus the legendary Paul Taylor’s Cloven Kingdom and Dennis Spaight’ s poetic Grauenliehe und Leben. Opening the program is Paul Taylor’ s Cloven Kingdom, which is considered a comic gem o f the modem repertoire and is set to music by Arcangelo Corelli, Henry Cow ell and M alloy M ille r According to Mr. Taylor, one o f the world s most influential, modem choreogra­ phers, Cloven Kingdom-premiered by the Paul Taylor Company in 1976-portrays man as a social animal, contrasting the elegant dance o f a social ball w ith that o f prim itive movement. The work, performed at a fast pace, features tuxedo-clad men, and women in long, flowing skirts adorned w ith other worldly, mirrored head pieces. Continuing in the contemporary dance mode, OBT w ill present the world premiere o f M inh Tran's Uncharted Territories, set to an epic score by Dale Svart. M r. T ran’s choreog­ raphy emphasizes the value he place on diver­ sity and reflects his early life experiences grow ­ ing up in Vietnam including the physical and emotional cost o f the Vietnam War, the peace he desire, and the freedom he now enjoys. Uncharted Territories represents the first work he has choreographed for a ballet com­ pany. For information call 227-6867. Norman Sylvester and Isaac Scott attended Portland’s Jefferson High School in the 60’s. They started play­ ing guitar in church. Norman & Isaac arc well known northwest blucsmen. Norman is based in Portland and Isaac master piece--Mr. Spaight’s most cherished work, and the last he created to O BT—received critical and popular acclaim for its poignancy and musical poetry at its premiere in October. 1992. The ballet is inspired by the poems o f Adelbert v.
