The public is invited and encour­
aged to tell the Task Force of their
experiences with the Oregon court sys­
tem and present suggestions about the
treatm ent o f m inorities. Public m eet­
ings, accom panied by interviews and
surveys, will give the Task Force an
opportunity to accurately evaluate the
current status of bias in the courts.
Judges made the decision to create
a task force sim ilar to those in W ashing­
ton, M ichigan, New Jersey, and New
Worship Services 8:00 a.m. & 11:00 a.m.

Judicial System continues its series o f
public m eetings being held throughout
the state with a Portland hearing sched­
uled for Thursday, November 12,1992
at Benson High School Auditorium,

egon. The Portland meeting times are
1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to
9:00 p.m. Interpreters will be provided

the Oregon Judicial Conference in l9 9 1 .
C hief Justice W allace P. Carson, Jr. o f
the Oregon Supreme Court appointed
the 17 member group to exam ine com ­
plaints about disparities in sentencing,
security releases, interpreter adequacy
and the charging process, among other
issues.
The first hearing was held in Wood-
bum on July 28th. Public hearings fol­
lowed in Pendleton and Ontario on
September 28th and 29th. Hearings
have also been scheduled for Klamath
Falls and Warm Springs on O ctober
26th and 27th. The final hearing will be
held in Salem, with November 19th as
the tentative date, pending selection o f
a m eeting place.

A ssociation for the Advancement of
Colored People (NAACP) invites the
public to attend the seventy-eighth anni­
versary banquet on Friday, October 30th,
6:30 pm at the Holiday Inn Airport, 8439
NE Colum bia Blvd. in Portland.
State Senator and candidate for S tate
Treasurer, Jim Hill, is the special guest
speaker for the banquet. Senator Hill is
the only African-American running for
statewide office in Oregon. Hill, an at­
torney served as a m ember of the Oregon
House o f Representatives from 1983-
1987, and was elected to the Oregon
Senate in 1987.
The NAACP is the oldest civil rights
organization in America founded in 1909
by a group o f black and white citizens to
remedy the historical wrongs o f racial
hatred and discrimination. O regon’s first
branch office opened on September 19,
1914. This is the oldest branch office
west of the Mississippi.
The 1992 theme is "Honoring our
Past, Fulfilling our Present and Prepar­
ing for O ur Future".

conference will also include a Youth
Forum, which will be moderated by
Kevin Fuller of The Oregonian. The
topic for discussion will be “Freedom
of Speech.” The Forum will begin
with presentations by four students
from the Portland area, and will wrap-
up with an open discussion period
which will encourage audience par­
ticipation.

The Youth Leadership Com m it­

W hitney M. Young, Jr. Education &
Cultural Center is offering a series of
free review sessions for the Scholastic
Aptitude Test (SAT), the standard apti­
tude test taken by high school students
interested in attending college. The ses­
sions take place Thursdays from 4-6
p.m. at the Center, located at 10 North
Russell Street.
The sessions are designed to help
high school sophomores, juniors and
seniors prepare for SAT exams offered
in N ovem ber, January and M arch.
“ Many students do poorly on their SAT
exam simply because they are unfam il­
iar with the form at,” said Urban League
Education & Career Development Di­
rector Herman L. Lessard, Jr. “ In addi­
tion to reviewing reading, English and
math skills, we will hold a mock exam
to help students learn how to work
within SAT time lim its.”
Funds for College, Etc. will offer a free
workshop on obtaining college finan­
cial aid on Tuesday, October 27 at 6
p.m. at the Urban League, 10 North
Russell St. The workshop is designed to
help parents and students locate finan­
cial aid sources they may not have
known about.

ships go unused because people did not
know about them,” Urban League D i­

“Funds for College, Etc. can help stu­
dents find out about the many programs
