Throughout its history, the Asso
ciation has maintained a strong com
m itment to help young persons achieve
higher education and financial assis
tance, through m inim al was given an
nually from 1917-1954. The R athe r-
ine G ra y M e m o ria l Scholarship,hon
oring the O A C W C ’ s first President,
was established in 1954 and mandated
that a m inim um o f $200 a year be given
in scholarships. The mandate today es
tablishes a m inim um scholarship o f
$500 annually; the tea’ s success deter
m ining the number o f scholarships
awarded and educational support given.
The past several years the Assoc ia-
tion has awarded tw o to three scholar
ships, donated to the United Negro
College Fund, and provided stipends
for attendance to the Black Colleges
Conference. B iennially, the Associa
tion sponsors an Oregon student for the
N a tio n a l A s s o c ia tio n o f C o lo re d
W omen’s Clubs Hallie Q. Brown Schol
arship. Miss Donita L. Lincoln, Fresh
man, U niversity o f Portland, was the
1990 recipient o f $1,000. Ms. Monica
Hurst, Sophomore, Gram bling U niver
sity, was Oregon’ s recipient o f the
$1,000 Northwest Region N A C W C
Scholarship.

Organizers o f the Black W om en’s
Gathering announced plans for this
year’ s event. The 10th Anniversary
Celebration o f the Black W om en’ s
Gathering w ill be May 8-9,1992. “ Love,
power and Strength Through Sister
hood” is the theme selected to com
memorate 10 years o f togetherness.
A ctivities scheduled arc: A free C el
ebration Feast on Friday, M ay 8 th at the
King Neighborhood F acility, 4815 N.
E. 7th, from 6 :0 0 pm to 7 :0 0 pm. Im me
diately follow ing dinner, workshops w ill
be offered on issues o f concern to B lack
women, on Saturday, may 9th, the an
nual Black W om en’ s Marketplace is

w ill feature local vendorsand represen
tatives from com m unity organizations.
L ig h t refreshments and child care w ill
be provided, during the afternoon, local
