U .S. Bank has received the Black U nited Fund o f O regon’s first “Helping H ands A w ard,” in recognition o f their support and efforts to improve the qual ity o f life in low -incom e communities. T he Helping Hands Award is given to corporations who seek to stim ulate grow th in low-income neighborhoods by supporting the program s and ser vices provided by the Black United Fund. T hanks to the generous support of U.S. Bank, last year the Black United Fund o f Oregon was able to assist thou sands o f O regonians through more than 100 community-based organizations. These organizations address a broad range of issues, such aschiklcare, em er gency services, domestic violence, eco nomic developm ent, etc., all o f which are designed to m ove low-income resi dents toward self-sufficiency. In addi tion, the Black United Fund has been successful in implementing several new programs which respond to the recom m endations outlined in the N/NE Eco nomic Development Plan. The series will attem pt to increase understanding in Portland’s African-American and Jew ish com m unities about the other group. Series co-sponsors are the Portland chapter of the American Jewish C om mittee and the Urban League o f Port land. Lectures are scheduled for M on day evenings (7:30 to 9:30 P.M..) from April 6 to 27. African-American lec tures will be presented at the Mittleman Jewish Community Center (6651 S.W. Capitol Hwy) while Jewish-American lectures will take place at the Urban League of Portland (IO N . Russell St.). Recently, Nordstrom was selected as one o f 25 national companies to be part o f the President’s Com m ittee on Employment of People with D isabili ties. Headed by Executive D irector Richard Douglas, the committee is re sponsible for increasing public and cor porate awareness about the em ploy ment o f individuals with disabilities. Bennett will represent Nordstrom on the committee. Nordstrom has promoted its M id west Human Resource Director, Tony Bennett, to the new position o f C orpo rate Disabilities Director. Bennett will be responsible for company efforts to address the Americans with D isabili ties Act, the new legislation that pro vides federal civil rights protection to people with disabilities. One o f B ennett’s priorities will be to develop and implement a com pre hensive training and awareness pro gram for Nordstrom employees about the ADA.
