M ayor J.E. “ B ud” Clark gave a kickoff address at high noon from the top o f an Oregon Air National Guard flat bed truck. He was joined in opening rem arks by Darryl Tukufu, CEO/Di- rcctor, Urban League o f Portland and Housing Authority o f Portland Direc tor, Denny West. The event featured a job/heallh fair, entertainm ent, citizen information and food in a block party atmosphere. The fair featured several local groups including Sista’s N ’ Motion, Unison, “ Bam Bam ” and OMSI “ R obots.” Arrangements were made to pro vide ribs, chicken and hamburgers for 400 people. Center and the com m unity,” said Executive Di rector Charles Carter. “ It’s a project I’ve thought about for three or four years. Now it’s a reality.” The mural, covering approxi m ately 450 feet o f wall space, will depict the history ad purpose o f L.I.F£. Center. The Low Income Families Em er gency Center is a nonprofit. United W ay agency that helps the needy in the Portland Metro area. Form ed out o f the war-on-poverty projects o f the 1960’s, the Center fills nearly 30,000 requests for food, clothing and house hold item s each year. Mr. Shamsud-Din has created murals for the Multnomah County Justice Center, The Portland Art Museum and Portland State Univer sity, among others. He has taught art classes at several local universities and also has taught privately. The m ural’s unveiling is set for Nov. 10, 1991. T h e G a th e r in g Friendships That Span the Decades The fifth annual Gathering was held this past weekend at The Airport Holiday Inn. This annual event hosted hundreds o f patrons who came from as faraw ay as Hawaii. The “ G athering” gives friends a chance to hold on to days o f old, to talk about “ Do you rem em ber w hen?” and to listen to the music o f another era. A mother o f four, success, determination and desire were the main components to her current success. A native o f Portland, Oregon and a gradu ate o f Lincoln High School, Robin took ler son M aurice, 13, and her daughter Sicole, 10, to a talent competition at Vlall 205 were she was approched by the casting director. He wanted to see if she would be interested in a part. A l though Robin d id n ’t get that particular part, she was selected as an extra. Robin decided to enroll in Film and C om m er cial c la sse s a t P o rtla n d C ivic rheatre.D edicated and determined, iobin found everything after the classes to be amazing! After a year she has been in various com m ericals, (such as Apple lacks and Mazda) films and more, Ap pearing in Les Schwab commericals with her family was a treat for her. W hat is needed in our community is taking the challenge to overcome ad versity and become a power. O ur m i nority businesses need to step it up another level instead o f taking the plunge. Since Sept. 1990, R obin’s life has changed. The kids active as mom, are also in acting. M aurice, 13, Nicole, 10, Erica, 5, and Michael. Robin is an em ployee at Voit Temporary Service in Beaverton (Technical D epartment Per sonnel). She enjoys dancing, hiking and walking. The Broadous family should be contended for their outstanding ef forts. More families need to instill the determination to succeed: it takes a lot of hard work but it’s really worth it. You can catch Robin in an upcom ing film (The Favor) which premieres in O ctober o f 1991, and also in The Marla Hanson Story. Richardson, Jr., was elected president of the O re gon State Board o f High Education in June. He has been on the Board since 1986, and served as vice president during 1990-91. He is the Director o f State and Local Government Relations for North west Natural Gas Co., serves on the board o f directors o f several local and national organizations, and is cu r rently chair of the board o f the N orth east Com m unity Developm ent C o r poration.
