January 15, 1991—The Portland Observer "Pagel5
“ All labor has dignity.”
It is a crime for people to live in this rich nation and
receive starvation w ages.”
Organized labor can be one of the most powerful
instruments in putting an end to discrim ination and
segregation.”
Our needs are identical with labor’s needs: decent
wages, fair working conditions, livable housing, old
age security, health and welfare measures, condi
tions in which families can grow, have education for
their children and respect in the community. That is
why Negroes support labor’s dem ands and fight
laws which curb labor. That is why the labor-hater
and labor-baiter is vertually always a twin-headed
creature spewing anti-Negro epithets from one
mouth and anti-labor propaganda from the other
mouth...The two most dynamic and cohesive liberal
forces in the country are the labor movement and
the Negro freedom m ovem ent...” (1961, AFL-CIO
national convention)
