Our needs are identical with labor’s needs: decent
wages, fair working conditions, livable housing, old
age security, health and welfare measures, condi­
tions in which families can grow, have education for
their children and respect in the community. That is
why Negroes support labor’s dem ands and fight
laws which curb labor. That is why the labor-hater
and labor-baiter is vertually always a twin-headed
creature spewing anti-Negro epithets from one
mouth and anti-labor propaganda from the other
mouth...The two most dynamic and cohesive liberal
forces in the country are the labor movement and
the Negro freedom m ovem ent...” (1961, AFL-CIO

The Metropolitan Service District, your regional government, handles
regionwide concerns in the urban areas of Clackamas, Multnomah
and Washington counties. Metro is responsible for solid waste
management, operation of the Metro Washington Park Zoo, trans­
portation and land-use planning, urban growth boundary manage­
ment, technical services to local governments and through the
Metropolitan Exposition-Recreation Commission, management of
the Oregon Convention Center, Memorial Coliseum, Civic Stadium
and the Portland Center for the Performing Arts.
