Cartoonist Focuses On Africa
and Positive Messages
The w orld is so messed up,
says comic book w riter and illustrator
Dwayne Ferguson, that escapism is a
necessary thing. “ When I go talk to
k id s,” Ferguson explains, “ I tell them,
i f you want to leave the w orld, don’ t do
drugs: read comic books or read a
novel. ’ ’ Ferg uson, 25, prac tices what he
preaches. “ A ll I do is White Castle and
N intendo,” he laughs.
He also acts, creates freelance
artw ork, watches, Saturday morning
cartoons and has several novels in the
works.
Ferguson’s first published comic
strip featured Hammy Hamster, a wise
cracking hamster that wore clothes.”
Ferguson flipped through the
phone book until he found a publication,
Prabatham, that wanted to print the strip.
He also developed another comic strip
that runs in tw o newspapers and an
upcoming n o v e l- ’ ’Captain A fric a ” ,
w hich he describes as “ Batman in A f
ric a ” .

One of the m ost charm ing tra d i
tions of the holiday season is the
real C h ristm as tree. Knowing a few
facts can help m ake yours even more
delightful.
A few sim ple care tips can en
h a n c e y o u r e n jo y m e n t o f y o u r
C h ristm as tree and keep it fresh
and fra g ra n t th roughout the holi
day season.
When you bring it home, cut a
q u arter inch oflfthe base ofthe trunk.
Keep the tree outdoors in a container
of w ater protected from wind and
sun until you’re ready to decorate.
Before bringing it into the house,
take an o th er q u a rte r inch off the
base so the stem can tak e up w ater.
Im m ediately place the tree in the
stand and fill it w ith fresh w ater.
Keep the w ater level above the fresh
cut. The tree may need as much as
a gallon of w a te r a day, so check the
stand daily.
For safety’s sake, check all elec
tric lights and connections before
decorating your tree and home. Use
lights w ith cords th a t a re not worn
or frayed and never use lighted
candles on the tree. Do en sure th a t
electrical circuits are not overloaded.
Place the tre e aw ay from fireplaces,
radiators, television sets and other
h e a t sources.
