Cartoonist Focuses On Africa and Positive Messages The w orld is so messed up, says comic book w riter and illustrator Dwayne Ferguson, that escapism is a necessary thing. “ When I go talk to k id s,” Ferguson explains, “ I tell them, i f you want to leave the w orld, don’ t do drugs: read comic books or read a novel. ’ ’ Ferg uson, 25, prac tices what he preaches. “ A ll I do is White Castle and N intendo,” he laughs. He also acts, creates freelance artw ork, watches, Saturday morning cartoons and has several novels in the works. Ferguson’s first published comic strip featured Hammy Hamster, a wise­ cracking hamster that wore clothes.” Ferguson flipped through the phone book until he found a publication, Prabatham, that wanted to print the strip. Ferguson’ s freelance work has included jobs fo r Burger K ing, W alt Disney, and even a C alifornia Raisins coloring book. He was one o f the recipi­ ents o f 1989’s Outstanding Young Men o f Am erica award. "Captain A frica " is syndicated in the C ity News, distributed throughout New Jersey and New York. Knowing a few facts can help m ake yours even more delightful. A few sim ple care tips can en­ h a n c e y o u r e n jo y m e n t o f y o u r C h ristm as tree and keep it fresh and fra g ra n t th roughout the holi­ day season. When you bring it home, cut a q u arter inch oflfthe base ofthe trunk. Keep the tree outdoors in a container of w ater protected from wind and sun until you’re ready to decorate. Before bringing it into the house, take an o th er q u a rte r inch off the base so the stem can tak e up w ater. Im m ediately place the tree in the stand and fill it w ith fresh w ater. Keep the w ater level above the fresh cut. The tree may need as much as a gallon of w a te r a day, so check the stand daily. For safety’s sake, check all elec­ tric lights and connections before decorating your tree and home. Use lights w ith cords th a t a re not worn or frayed and never use lighted candles on the tree.
