Ms. Gladys Palmer performed for
the African American Press Reception
July 18, at the Sheraton Hotel. The
event was well attended by a broad
range of community members to wit
ness the crowning of King Paul Knauls,
Queen Cora Benjamin, Prince Muham-
med Najieb, and Princess Rukajah Adams
by the honorable Judge Deiz.
Gladys Palmer highlighted the en
tire event with her big band to contem
porary jazz sounds of * * Round Midnight
to Summertime” . In 1985, Lionel J.
Wilson ,the mayor of Oakland, pro
claimed October 11 as ‘‘Gladys E.
Palmer’ ’ day because of her sensational
career performing with rcknowned ar-
test such as Billy Daniels, Fats Waller,
Billy Eckstine, Sarah Vaughn, and the
Dorsey Brothers. She was once sum
moned by Duke Ellington at Carnegie
Hall to perform “ Fool That 1 Am” - a
song she co-authored.
At age 84, Gladys still performs at
Kelley’s Olympian company, 426 SW
Washington, with Mary Parker every
Friday night.

In the last four years millions of
people have seen Spike Lee’s films and
have read the companion books-Spi/z
Lee's Gotta Have It, Uplift the Race,
and Do the Right Thing (which, by the
way, can all be found in the Portland
library), Receiving notoriety with the
success of each
film , he has
caused a stir in the
film industry both
behind and in front
of the camera.
With "She's
Gotta Have It"
(1986), he won an
award for best new
director at the
Cannes Film Fes
tival and "School
D aze" (1988),
was a financial
success, receiving
an
enorm ous
amount of media
attention due to its

message. But it
was "Do the Right Thing" (1989), that
really pushed his name and talent to the
forefront of American filmmaking. Now,
he is considered one of the most excit
ing, innovative, and thought provok-
ing-as well as inspiring in a controver
sial sense--Black film directors around
today.
His upcoming movie, Mo’ Better
Blues (the title stems from what one of
Spike’s ex-girlfirends dubbed “ the
nasty” : "the mo' better”), features a
companion b o o k -
which will be re
leased on August 10
by Fireside Books/
Simon & Schuster
for$12.95--in which
Spike shares his
thought on the
people and events
behind the making
of his new film. The
movie is about a
young man (played
by Denzel Washing
ton) and his relation
ships with his man
ager, father, band,
two w om en-a shy
schoolteacher, and
a
less-than-shy
nightclub singer-
and how they tie in with his music.
Both the movie and the book will be
reviewed in an upcoming issue of the
Observer.
