Wilson ,the mayor of Oakland, pro claimed October 11 as ‘‘Gladys E. With "She's Gotta Have It" (1986), he won an award for best new director at the Cannes Film Fes tival and "School D aze" (1988), was a financial success, receiving an enorm ous amount of media attention due to its c o n tro v e rs ia l SP IK E LEE message. But it was "Do the Right Thing" (1989), that really pushed his name and talent to the forefront of American filmmaking. Now, he is considered one of the most excit ing, innovative, and thought provok- ing-as well as inspiring in a controver sial sense--Black film directors around today. His upcoming movie, Mo’ Better Blues (the title stems from what one of Spike’s ex-girlfirends dubbed “ the nasty” : "the mo' better”), features a companion b o o k - which will be re leased on August 10 by Fireside Books/ Simon & Schuster for$12.95--in which Spike shares his thought on the people and events behind the making of his new film. The movie is about a young man (played by Denzel Washing ton) and his relation ships with his man ager, father, band, two w om en-a shy schoolteacher, and a less-than-shy nightclub singer- and how they tie in with his music. Both the movie and the book will be reviewed in an upcoming issue of the Observer. featuring Cosmotologist from Chicago, Illinois Come let's have fun and learn Leisure Relaxer Systems TICKETS: $15.00 10% off on all products LEISURE CURL WORKSHOP NOSTALGIC HAIR DESIGN II 4100 N.E.
