Local Educator To Be Honored
The M asonic O fficers A ssociation o f Portland has selcted Edna M ae
Pittm an as the recipient o f a Special R ecognition A w ard for outstanding
service to the Portland Public School system. The presentation is scheduled
for the Public School A ppreciation B anquet, Saturday, April 7, 1990 at 6:00
p.m ., at the Scottish Rite Tem ple, 709 SW 15th A ve., Portland. M s. Pittm an
is em ployed by the Portland School D istrict as an Instructor at W hitm an
M iddle School.
SB A Awards Grant Minority Business Group
Portland C om m unity C ollege and the O regon A ssociation o f M inority E ntrepreneurs
accepted a $149,774 aw ard from th U.S. Small B usiness A dm inistration Jan. 24 to im prove
the success o f m inority-ow ned businesses throughout Oregon.
R epresentatives from PCC and O A M E w ere on hand at Portland City Hall to receive the
grant from SBA officials. Those present include O A M E E xecutive D irector Sam Brooks,
PCC President D an M oriarty, SBA Regional A dm inistrator H arold W olf and Erline M.
Patrick, SBA M inority Small B usiness and C apital O w nership D evelopm ent A ssociate
A dm inistrator from W ashington, D.C. Patrick oversees all o f the ag en cy ’s program s to assist
the grow th and developm ent o f m inority-ow ned sm all businesses.
P C C ’s Sm all B usiness D evelopm ent C enter team ed with O A M E to develop an
innovative program that provides targeted m anagem ent and technical assistance to d isad­
vantaged businesses. The PC C /O A M E program will provide one-on-one business co u n sel­
ing, w orkshops and sem inars and business plan developm ent to eligible firm s. B rooks said.

Offers Six Scholarships
R ose C ity C onnection, Inc. offers six
(’6) 5 5 0 0 scholarships to deserving A frican-
American students who reside in the greater
m etropolitan area o f the City o f Portland. In
addition. Rose City C onnection w ill also
‘ aw ard a full one (1) y ear scholarship w hich
w ill cover tuition costs to P ortland C o m ­
m unity C ollege. Scholarship funds m ust be
used by applicants to pursue a college
education or vocational training leading to
a degree and/or proficiency in a profession
or an applied science.
Rose City C onnection, Inc. is a public
service organization founded in 1983. A l­
though its activities and goodw ill cross
m any cultural and econom ic lines. Rose
C ity C onnection is predom inately an A fri­
can-American organization with strong roots
in the com m unity.
T he m inim um cum ulative high school
G P A o f all applicants to be considered is

City Connection scholarship, applicants must

Full high school transcript with cum ulative
GPA score; 3. tw o (2) letters o f reference;
4. An essay o f not m ore than 2 typew ritten
- pages responding to a topic o f current in ter­
est to the Black C om m unity. Incom plete

T H E COU RSES
The 10k route is a figure-8 loop. The 5k
course is out and back along Front Avenue
between the Fremont and Hawthorne Bridges.
W alkers w ill receive a m ap o f the walk
route on event m orning.

Stage this year betw een A ugust 23 and
Septem ber 3. The Show case Stage is very
popular am ong fairgoers and perform ers
alike so perform ers should sign up soon,

other stage perform ers w ishing to be con­

The O regon State Fair runs A ugust 23
through Septem ber 3. To com m em orate its
125th year, a special preview night is sched­
uled for T hursday, A ugust 23.
Laurel Dukehart was selected this week
as M arketing M anager for the Private In ­
dustry C ouncil. M s. D ukehart will be re ­
sponsible for m arketing activities includ­
ing public relations, prom otion, custom er
service, m arket research, and m arket evalu­
ation and planning. She w ill also coordi­
nate the activities o f the M arketing C om ­
m ittee o f the B oardd of D irectors and, with
the president, serve as an official spokes­
person for the organization.
Prior to joining The Private Industry
C ouncil, D ukehart w orked as a consultant
and held positions in sales and m arketing
with Precision Castparts Corp., Heath Tecna
Aerospace Corporation and C riton T ech­
nologies.
