Oregon, Annie E. Shine will be held on

Mrs. Shine, affectionately known as
“ Mamma Shine’ ’, passed this life, as we
know it, on February 13th in Tyler, Texas.
She was 94 years old. Funeral services
and internment were held on Saturday,
February 18th, 1989 in Jacksonville,
Texas.
Mrs. Shine was one of six children bom
to John and Annie Palmer. She was bom
in the month of January on the 17th day
in the year of 1985.
Mamma Shine is the last of the palmer
family. Her two sisters and her three
brothers, along with her parents, preceded
her in death.
Willie Lee Shine and his bride, Annie
Moved to Vernonia, Oregon in 1928.
Mr. worked in the saw mills, there. There
were other Black families working in the
saw mills, too. They were the Fletchers,
the Powers, the Johnsons, the Baileys,
the Taylors and several others. They
moved to Portland when the saw mill
closed down. Some of them moved back
after it re-opened and then back to
Portland, again, The Bishop Faster, paster
of the St. Paul Church of God in Christ
on Rodney, would go out to Vernonia
and hold Sunday services for the Black
families, working there.
Willie and Annie Shine moved to Portland
in 1931. Mr. Shine first owned a barber
shop in the Royal Palm Hotel on Flanders,
downtown; then when the hotel closed,
he opened a shop at the Medley Hotel at
Interstate and Albina for years. Annie
worked as a restaurant owner on the
other side of the river and then as a
housekeeper at the University o f Oregon
Health Science Center until retirement.
Annie never remarried and she never
had any children of her own. But she had
a love for children that was so beautiful
and of such______ you could only call
it a gift from God. And she had her own
