Shine will be held on Sunday, March 5th at 4:00p.m. in the afternoon at the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, 116 N K Schuyler Street and First Avenue. Mrs. Shine, affectionately known as “ Mamma Shine’ ’, passed this life, as we know it, on February 13th in Tyler, Texas. She was 94 years old. Funeral services and internment were held on Saturday, February 18th, 1989 in Jacksonville, Texas. Mrs. Shine was one of six children bom to John and Annie Palmer. She was bom in the month of January on the 17th day in the year of 1985. Mamma Shine is the last of the palmer family. Her two sisters and her three brothers, along with her parents, preceded her in death. Willie Lee Shine and his bride, Annie Moved to Vernonia, Oregon in 1928. Mr. worked in the saw mills, there. There were other Black families working in the saw mills, too. They were the Fletchers, the Powers, the Johnsons, the Baileys, the Taylors and several others. They moved to Portland when the saw mill closed down. Some of them moved back after it re-opened and then back to Portland, again, The Bishop Faster, paster of the St. Paul Church of God in Christ on Rodney, would go out to Vernonia and hold Sunday services for the Black families, working there. Willie and Annie Shine moved to Portland in 1931. Mr. Shine first owned a barber shop in the Royal Palm Hotel on Flanders, downtown; then when the hotel closed, he opened a shop at the Medley Hotel at Interstate and Albina for years. Annie worked as a restaurant owner on the other side of the river and then as a housekeeper at the University o f Oregon Health Science Center until retirement. Annie never remarried and she never had any children of her own. But she had a love for children that was so beautiful and of such______ you could only call it a gift from God. She was a member of the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church for 55 years. She was the president of the Gospel Choir, president of the Mission Board, janitor of the church and served in any other capacity she was asked to serve in. She was, also, a member of the OACW (Oregon Association of Colored W omen’s Club). “ Mamma Shine’s ” memory will linger on in our hearts for a long, long time. S he was Grandma to some, Mamma to some and Auntie to others; but, a good friend to many and strong servant of God. This workshop is being conducted as a result of violent deaths and suicides in Northeast Portland. It is being directed to professionals who advise and counsel Black children in the hopes that these im­ portant needs will be recognized, treated and resolved. Subjects to be covered: 1) The emotional impact on peer survivors when a young person dies suddenly or unexpectedly. 2) The process of learning to recognize the symptoms of grief that are not being properly resolved. 3) Portland area bereavement support groups that stand ready to help. 4) Providing tools so that a grief/bereavement resolution group may be started within the church or home.
