“ WE SHALL OVERCOME”
Traces History Of Civil Rights Anthem
Few songs evoke the emotion
and images of the civil rights move
ment more than “ We Shall Over
come." From the streets of the
American south to the streets of
Europe, Asia, and South Africa, the
song has become the anthem for
protest movements worldwide.

decade. The sharpest decline (26.5%) took place from 1977 to 1986,
when the number of Black doctorates fell from 1,116 to 810. In relative
terms, their share of the pool peaked in 1977 (4.5%). By 1986, the
irregular but steady downward trend shows that the Black doctoral
pool had reached its lowest level in over a decade and shows no sign
of recovery.

Black Woman Bishop Address Jurisdiction Bishops
The first Black woman Bishop of the 9.1 million member United
Methodist Church, Bishop Leontine T. C. Kelly of San Francisco
addressed the denomination’s Western Jurisdiction recently.
Bishop Kelly said that new ethnic populations coming into the
Western United States in unprecedented numbers require Western
Christians to put aside ‘Lone Ranger,’ independent attitudes. "To be
Christian in the Pacific Rim bears far more responsibility for change
and creative discipleship than many of us are willing to admit," she
said, pleading with her listeners to work with, not for, people.
Bishop Kelly was elected in 1984 and must retire from active
service August 31. She announced she will remain in California upon
retirement to teach at the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley.
Workshop Series —
Critical Shortage Of Black Professors
Representatives from historically Black colleges (HBCs)
throughtout Georgia met recently at Spelman College for the first in a
series of five workshops aimed at encouraging more undergraduates
to prepare for academic careers.
The workshop series, entitled, ‘The Preparation of
Undergraduates for Faculty Careers’, grew out of a shared concern
that presidents and chief academic officers of HBC's have about fill
ing faculty positions and providing role models as fewer Black
students seek and complete graduate degrees. The series is
presented by the Historically Black Colleges - Educational Testing
Service Collaboration and Spelman College.

participating in the press conference at the recent Democratic National
Convention was Senator Lloyd Bentsen, who was nominated for the second
spot on the Democratic ticket. Although Jackson did not win the nomina

WHAT IS A BUSINESS INCUBATOR
A business incubator is a place where a fledgling company can
receive economic, managerial and technical support. Each incubator is
unique - financial backing and support varies with the needs of tenants
and resources of supporters.
The incubator concept was developed in the early 1980's as a
way to overcome the dismal success rate of start-up companies in the
United States. Project backing might come from educational institu
tions, businesses, public and community groups. Assistance could
include low overhead, technical assistance, access to
equipment/laboratories and business advice.
WHAT IS THE CASCADE BUSINESS CENTER CORPORATION?
The Cascade Business Center Corporation was formed in 1982
by the Portland Development Commission, Portland Private Industry
Council and Portland Community College. Its purpose is to nurture the
development of small business incubators in the Portland area.
In 1982, CBCC opened the sixth incubator in the United
States — Cascade Business Service Center. Just four years later, the
second incubator location is opening — Cascade Business Industrial
Center — which will support Portland’s commercial and industrial new
business developments.
Does it take very long to smoke that?”
PURPOSE
The purpose of Portland’s business incubator is to support new
businesses by offering selected tenants below market rents/overhead,
technical assistance and business advice, provide entrepreneurial and
job opportunities that strengthens the economic base in North/
