From the streets of the American south to the streets of Europe, Asia, and South Africa, the song has become the anthem for protest movements worldwide. ™ *s A new public television d o c u m e n ta ry , “ We S h a ll Overcome,” tells the unique and fas­ cinating history behind the song, and shows how in recent years the song has inspired those involved in countless struggles of non-violence, Harry Belafonte peace, and social change. The pro­ gram airs in conjunction with the 25th anniversary of the historic Civil Rights March on Washington, D.C., in 1963. Magic’s Friends Take To The Court For UNCF It will be a friendly basketball game of run and shoot when Charles Barkley, Karl Malone, Anthony “ Spud” Webb, Dominique Wilkins, Tyrone Bogues, Michael Jordan, Isiah Thomas, Michael Cooper and Earvin Johnson take to the court for the benefit of The NEWS BRIEFS largest share of doctoral degrees awarded to minorities, however, they lost considerable ground in doctoral production during the decade. The sharpest decline (26.5%) took place from 1977 to 1986, when the number of Black doctorates fell from 1,116 to 810. In relative terms, their share of the pool peaked in 1977 (4.5%). By 1986, the irregular but steady downward trend shows that the Black doctoral pool had reached its lowest level in over a decade and shows no sign of recovery. “ These workshops are a very important step that we are taking to address the curent crisis in higher education,” said Dr. Johnnetta Cole, president of Spelman. “ Unless we take positive action and work cooperatively, we are facing a future without any Black professors in higher education.” All of the workshops will be held on the Spelman campus in Atlanta. United Negro College Fund on August 7, at the Los Angeles Forum beginning at 7:00 p.m. In addition to the game, Magic Johnson will host a Black Tie “ Midsummer Night’s Magic" Dinner at the Century Plaza Hotel on August 6, beginning at 4:00 p.m. with a special silent auction in the California Showroom. The auction will feature luxurious prizes of jewelry, furs, automobiles and trips. Lucky winners will also be able to bid on memorabilia of entertainers and athletes. Golden Bird, Inc. serves as a corporate patron. Black Woman Bishop Address Jurisdiction Bishops The first Black woman Bishop of the 9.1 million member United Methodist Church, Bishop Leontine T. C. Kelly of San Francisco addressed the denomination’s Western Jurisdiction recently. Bishop Kelly said that new ethnic populations coming into the Western United States in unprecedented numbers require Western Christians to put aside ‘Lone Ranger,’ independent attitudes. "To be Christian in the Pacific Rim bears far more responsibility for change and creative discipleship than many of us are willing to admit," she said, pleading with her listeners to work with, not for, people. Bishop Kelly was elected in 1984 and must retire from active service August 31. She announced she will remain in California upon retirement to teach at the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley. Workshop Series — Critical Shortage Of Black Professors Representatives from historically Black colleges (HBCs) throughtout Georgia met recently at Spelman College for the first in a series of five workshops aimed at encouraging more undergraduates to prepare for academic careers. The workshop series, entitled, ‘The Preparation of Undergraduates for Faculty Careers’, grew out of a shared concern that presidents and chief academic officers of HBC's have about fill­ ing faculty positions and providing role models as fewer Black students seek and complete graduate degrees. The series is presented by the Historically Black Colleges - Educational Testing Service Collaboration and Spelman College. Horace Sanders WHAT IS A BUSINESS INCUBATOR A business incubator is a place where a fledgling company can receive economic, managerial and technical support. Each incubator is unique - financial backing and support varies with the needs of tenants and resources of supporters. The incubator concept was developed in the early 1980's as a way to overcome the dismal success rate of start-up companies in the United States. Project backing might come from educational institu­ tions, businesses, public and community groups. Assistance could include low overhead, technical assistance, access to equipment/laboratories and business advice. WHAT IS THE CASCADE BUSINESS CENTER CORPORATION? The Cascade Business Center Corporation was formed in 1982 by the Portland Development Commission, Portland Private Industry Council and Portland Community College. Its purpose is to nurture the development of small business incubators in the Portland area. In 1982, CBCC opened the sixth incubator in the United States — Cascade Business Service Center. Just four years later, the second incubator location is opening — Cascade Business Industrial Center — which will support Portland’s commercial and industrial new business developments. Yes,and it’s time well-spent LABOR SECRETARY MAKES ANNOUNCEMENT WASHINGTON— Secretary of Labor, Ann McLaughlin has announced that the U.S. Department of Labor will provide $8.7 million to 51 public and private groups to develop ways to improve the produc­ tivity of the American workforce. The competitively awarded grants and contracts will go to labor, business and community-based organizations; state and local govern­ ments, colleges and universities, and other non-profit groups. Fourteen of the projects will test methods to improve the workplace literacy.
