A former big-band conductor and musical director who has worked with people like B ing C rosb y, his initial claim to fame was "Gospel jazz" with a big band sound, something that shocked the conservative white Christian world in the 1950s...but that is another story- Twenty-three years ago, he founded L exicon M usic and the L ight R ecords label. Although this company has had numerous white artists over the years, it is best known for its Black Gospel successes, such as A ndrae C rou ch , San dra C rouch, D ouglas M iller and V an essa B ell A rm stro n g . Light had enjoyed the phenomenal success of the" L ove A live" series of albums by T h e H aw kins F a m ily , which sold millions. Among the firm's many assets were favorite songs like "My Tribute" and "B less H is H oly Nam e" by A ndrae C rouch, Changed" by W alter H aw kins, "H oly Holy" by Jim m y and C arol O w ens and Ralph C arm ichael's own "H e's E verything T o Me." About five years ago, after a stint of being distributed by the huge W ord R ecords system. Lexicon Music opened its own distribution company. By 1986, it was handling a great deal of records for other companies, such as C om m and R ecords (home of the hit group N ic h o la s) and B irthright, a pioneering Black Gospel company owned by Dr. Byron Spears. It seemed as if Lexicon Music had become the biggest thing in Black Gospel. Then the roof fell in. Lexicon Music found itself crippled by unrealistic contracts that could not be met. Several leading artists left Light and the distributed labels pulled out. Carmichael reorganized his staff but found himself literally millions of dollars in the hole. "It was very painful, says Carmichael. "I promised everyone 100 cents on the dollar and I m sure that many did not believe they would ever see their money." Jeru salemites of all ages gathered Saturday evening, June 25, to hear a special lecture by Dr. Alfonso Crim, Atlanta’s Superin tendent of Public Schools. Dr. Crim’s lecture entitled “The Moral and Ethical Elements in Martin Luther King’s Philosophy and their Significance Today,” was the highlight of an evening at which a special exhibit of Dr. King’s life and works was official ly opened. The exhibit, in Hebrew, was prepared by the International Cultural Center for Youth; it will travel to shcools throughout Israel to help Israeli young people to more fully understand Dr. King’s philosophies. Also participating in the festive evening was Mr. Yitzhak Navon, deputy Prime Minister and Minis ter of Education and Culture. Mr. Navon welcomed Dr. Crim and spoke of the strong connection between Israel and the ideas put forward by Dr. King. Mercer and his wife, Dr. Crim’s daughter, current ly reside in Tel Aviv. His daughter, he noted ironically, is on a brief trip outside of Israel. Two years ago, ceremonies were held in Jerusalem to dedi cate a street named after Dr. King in the Liberty Bell Park. ~ This past winter, on January 18, 1988, Israel’s entire educational system devoted the day to a ser ies of discussions, lectures and audio-visual programs to mark the 20th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Leader’s death. Dr. Crim stressed that the leader’s ideas were as relevant today as there were during his lifetime.
