Upward Bound And Still A ’ Climbing
local rainbow c o a litio n of
som e 35 m otivated high
school s tu d e n ts has decided to
forego the lazy unfettered plea­
sures o f a sum m er vacation to
c o m m it them selves to the devel­
opm ent of th e ir fu tu re careers.
These y o u th fu l men and w om en
participated in th e ir firs t o rie n ta ­
tio n at Portland State U niversity
Saturday m orning. The Upward
Bound program is under the d i­
rection o f Arm ando LaGuardia,
h im se lf an alum nus of a s im ila r
p ro g ra m a t J e ffe r s o n H ig h
School. He is assisted in the year
round program by Peggy Adam s,
the perm anent counselor.
The sum m er program has been
augm ented by a diverse num ber
o f pedagogical s p e c ia lis ts c o ­
ordinated by Bobby Jam es. Mr.
Jam es is best know n fo r his c o u n ­
seling w ork at L in fie ld C ollege.
He presently heads an alternative
program at Franklin H igh School.
The s tu d e n ts w ill pursue a fu ll­
tim e co lle g e preparatory academ ­
ic program . E x p e c ta tio n s are
high, the w ork is dem anding and
se lf-d is c ip lin e is m andatory. The
com prehensive m athem atics pro­
gram w ill be under the d ire c tio n
o f Sandy Lillevik. Vic M ig lio re tto
w ill guide his s tu d e n ts th ro u g h a
n o v e l e x p lo r a tio n o f th o s e
periods w h ich had a d ire c t im p a ct
on the developm ent of the o rie n ­
tal civilization.
George B ruender w ill head an
all im portant tu to ria l to im prove
the w ritin g s k ills o f the students.
Prior to jo in in g the sum m er ses­
sion, each person was required to
w rite a s p e c ific essay about the
person w ho had the greatest in ­
fluence in se le ctin g the d ire c tio r,
each has taken thus far in life.
D uring the six week sum m er p eri­
od they w ill hone th e ir in itia l e f­
fo rt in to a literary m asterpiece.

O bserver and also a Research A s­
sociate in N eu ro b io lo g y at P ort­
land S tate U niversity, w ill c o n d u c t
a ground school in several d is c i­
p lin e s of A erospace S cie n ce
along w ith a v is it to an a irp o rt and

sim ulator. Mr. M cP herson is an
avid private w ith 35 years and
th o u sa n d ’s of hours of flig h t tim e
as the p ilo t in com m and. He
taught the standard version of
th is course to Englew ood, New
Jersey high school stu d e n ts for
m any years under the a u spices of
N egro A irm en International.
Kathleen H o w le tt w ill teach a
course in p u b lic speaking. M iss
H o w le tt w ill focus on the fact that
speech is concerned not only
w ith c o n te n t but also w ith the
body language and se lf c o n fid ­
ence the speaker com m ands.
A m y S utton w ill get the s tu ­
dents involved w ith jo urnalism .
D uring previous sum m er ses­
sions the group has pu b lish e d a
newspaper. D uring the current
sum m er session th e ir goal w ill be
to co m p le te at least one jo u r­
n a lis tic exercise.

to m ake presentatio ns to the en­
tire group.
A Bridge course in Language
A d s D evelopm ent w ill be given by
Linda G erber as an a d junct to the
required course in w riting.
The sum m er project is funded
p a rtially by the Private Industry
C o u n cil o f Portland. S tudents
receive a tw o hour stipend fo r
each day they attend classes. A t­
tendance is m andatory. A t the
end of the academ ic session they
w ill be em ployed in sum m er jobs.

State U niversity is a m odel fo r the
rest of the nation. S tudents w ho
participate in th is program are as­
sured of adm issio n to all state
U niversities. O nce in college,
th e ir survival rate is a rem arkable
Pack 29, is a m u lti-cu ltu ra l
group. The Pack has been in ex­
istence since the sixties, but
never be active as it is now. Two
years ago the Urban League of
Portland agreed to help revitalize
the Pack through its sponsorship.
T hrough local parents e ffo rts
from both schools, Pack 29 is the
m ost active m u lti-cu ltu ra l Pack
througho ut N orth and N ortheast
Portland. T his year the Pack
started w ith eighteen boys and
registered th irte e n as o ffic ia l
m em bers.
The slogan of the Pack is, "The
sky is the lim it.” The Pack has
tw o dens that m eet every T hurs­
day, one at 3:15 p.m. and the other
m eeting at 6:00 p.m. Using the
them e, "T he sky is the lim it,” the
boys have m ade w ith in the
dens — houses,
w ig w a m s ,
bridges, and tow ers, made out of
po p sicle sticks.
They have scu lp tu re d anim als
out of a bars of soap. The m otto,
is ‘ S e lf-R e lia n c e and In te r ­
dependency.’
The Pack fo r the firs t tim e is
p a rticip a tin g in a m ajor parade,
and w ill be representing the C om ­
m u n ity and the Urban League in a
S p irit of C o m m u n ity Pride and
T ogetherness.’
