Elder Jeri Ann Harvey To Preach At Renewal Weekend Free Meals An estimated 10,000 Oregon children, including 4,000 m i grants, will receive free meals during the summer at 85 loca tions, including schools, parks, churches, and camps. The program, funded by the U S. Department of Agriculture, provides meals to needy children, but any child under the age of 18 may have a free meal at most lo cations. The only exceptions are summer camps and Upward Bound activities. Most meals will be lunches, but some sites will provide up to four meals, including snacks. Broadway, Portland 20250. ‘Musical Celebration’ G ran ts A nnounced Musical Weekend Planned About 1.800 needy children, senior citizens and music stu dents will spend a week for as lit tle as $10 at The Salvation Army s Camp Kuratli at Trestle Glen this summer. Located 22 miles southeast of Portland, the camp provides 120 acres of wooded slopes, two heated swimming pools, a giant activity center, and outdoor and indoor sports. Following a $2.5 million renovation, Camp Kuratli is recognized as one of the finest residential facilities in the state. The campers will come from communities throughout Oregon and southern Idaho. About 450 will come from the Portland Tri- County area. The campers w ill have a chance — many for the first time ever _ to experience nature, learn new skills and get along with others. Community service camps will take place during the weeks of June 28 - July 4; July 12 - 18; August 2 - 8; August 16 - 22; and August 23 29 A music camp will take place July 21 - 31. People who wish to help send a needy child to camp can make a $100 tax-deductible contribution to The Salvation Army. by Mattie Ann Callier-Spears The Sharon Church located at 5209 N.E. 22nd Avenue, will be hosting a ‘Musical Celebration on the 25th of June at 7.00 p.m. in the evening. The program will feature the well-known Dr. Carl Parker and guest. There will be the participa tion of other choirs and groups from the community: Berean AME Cathedral Choir, Marlynn Allen and Mike Bishop, Male Chorus, St. Paul Baptist In spirational Choir, Sharon Choir, and many others. The public is cordially invited to attend the Musical Celebration’ which is being sponsored by the People to People Ministries. State grants for separate pro grams serving low-income pre schoolers and providing educa tional support to parents were an nounced June 8, by State School Supt. Verne A. Duncan. Eleven agencies will receive a total of $1,067,189. in State Pre kindergarten grants which will provide comprehensive health, social and educational services to low-income pre-schoolers to in crease the likelihood of their suc cess in school. Urban League Schedules Dinner Three agencies will receive a total of $266,797 in “ Together for Children” grants which will pro vide educational support to par ents of “ at-risk” children between the ages of birth and eight years. They are Birth to Three, Eugene - $56,354; Central Oregon Com munity College, Bend -$143,575, and Crisis Intervention (Jackson County), Medford, $66.868. The Urban League of Portland will hold its Annual Dinner on Thursday, July 28, 1988. at the Jantzen Beach Red Lion. A no host reception will begin at 6:30 p.m. and the dinner begins at 7:30 p.m. The evening’s program w ill in clude musical selections by ‘The Ron Steen Trio', featuring Shirley Nanette, and The Streetcorner Singers. Mr. Usenl E. Perkins, president of the Urban League, will give the keynote address. Mr Ken Boddie, KOIN-TV Channel 6 news reporter, will be the master of ceremonies.
