Cherry of NEW G old) Tubman School Honored CRUSH - SQUIRT A -W Three years ago Dr. Prophet brought Renee Wilkerson-Ander son to Portland to coordinate and administer the MESA program. MESA (Mathematics, Engineer ing, Science Achievement) is an after-school activity designed to attract minority students and to develop an interest in academic achievement in mathematics and science. The activities are sup ported by Portland State Uni versity and businesses in the metropolitan area. At the annual awards banquet, on June 2, at the Smith Center, PSU, Harriet Tubman Middle School was honored as having the most outstanding MESA pro gram. It’s three Harriet Tubman teacher coordinators Ken Krause (science), Gary Starr (mathema tics), and Melanie Ramsey (scie- 1 Paul E. Coakley nee) have successfully involved over 60 students in the after school activities, tutorial pro gram, and weekend field trips. The success of the program comes from the administrative support given by Paul E. Coakley, principal of Harriet Tubman. On April 2, 1988 at the Scottish Rite Temple, the Portland Masons honored him as most outstanding Principal of the Year. His philos ophy of, “ if it’s good for kids we’ll do everything we can to support it” , rings true not only for MESA but for the many other after s c h o o l p ro g ra m s he has supported. Teachers along with his admin istrative staff could be found (Root Beer or Cromo) R egular or Sugar Fraa working with as many as 180 stu dents in after-school activities.
