June 8, 1988, Portland Observer, Page 5 RELIGION Discrimination Among Believers by M attie Ann C allier-Spears W hen we study the s c rip tu re s — we find that God has g i ven us a clear and c o n c is e set of rules to fo llo w . O ur actions, our service to H im and our very lives are clearly defined in the pas sages o f scripture. As we read the sm all, but po w erful, book of T itu s — we read as Paul w rite s to the people of TITUS how they m ust live a ccording to C h ris t’s teachings. “ For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the cir cumcision: Whose mouths must be sto p p e d , w ho s u b v e rt w h o le houses, teaching things w hich they ought not, for filthy lucre’s sake.’ ’ T itu s 1:10 & 11 A ll through the B ible we find w ords o f encouragem ent, w ords o f hope, w ords of love and w ords o f chastisem ent. Every true believer o f Jesus C h ris t is In the w orld — BUT — not of the w orld. Today, we are c o n s ta n tly being faced w ith one discrepancy after a n o th e r— in the s o lid a rity of our C h ris tia n ity . There are elem ents of d is c rim i nation everyw here you look. One d e n o m in a t io n b e in g p it t e d against anothe r because o f its d if ferences in the order o f its ser vice; or of how m any people are speaking in tongues; or, w hether or not the cong re g a tio n sh o u ts or s its q u ie tly and listens; or, (get this) w h e th e r or not the m usic is loud enough. W e (C hristians or Believers) are know n by our fru it (our character, p e r s o n a litie s , deeds, convictions). H ow loud or s o ft the m u s ic is played does not m atter, how m any people are speaking in tongue s does not m atter, the or der o f the service does not m atter. W hat does m atter is w h ether our fa ith is firm ly anchored on the. Solip Rock — Jesus. If, we can h o nestly w itness, to the fact, th a t C h ris t is tru ly m o ti vating us — then, careless, fo o lis h and w ro n g fu l fe e lin g s of d is c rim i nation tow ards our fe llo w man w o u ld not be a part o f o ur de- meanor. H ow can we expect to w in souls fo r C h rist if we d o n ’t have our acts together? T his may appear to be a b it radi cal; but, its truth. There are people being turned away from C h ristian c h u rc h e s b e ca u s e o f a ttire ; because o f how they look ph ysi cally; because of how they sm ell; because o f the c o lo r o f th e ir skin. Do you realize that if we had had everything together, in the firs t place, C h rist w o u ld not have had to m ake th a t suprem e sacrifice? C h rist cam e to save that w h ich was lost. To give everyone “ new b irth ” . To give everyone “ new hope" and a joy that the w orld can’t remove. D on’t becom e as the S cribes and Pharisees, d u rin g J e s u s ’ tim e, and figure that you know so m uch u n til you fo rg e t the true m eaning behind w hat you have been so ca re fu lly taught. Have we, also, becom e so b lin d w ith pride and piousness th a t w e ’ve lost s ig h t o f C hrist? W ell, th a t’s w hat happened to the S cribes and Pharisees. C h rist w as right there am ong them and they knew him not. “ He was despised and re je cte d o f men ..."
