Weve had It with drug use, and drug abuse, and drug deals, and drug houses! Those are terms for p o llu tio n . . . pollution of mind, body and spirit. Drugs are widening the gulf of disparity between the "haves" and "have-nots" in our society. Drugs are making "might-have beens" out of our young people. We all know someone who has been dragged down by drugs . . . Someone who m ig h t have been a star athlete . . m ig h t have gone on to college . . . m ig h t have become a force for good in the community. Instead, that potential is wasted . . . those dreams, unrealized. Drug users give up the most basic rewards of a clean life. They wind up caring more for their drugs than they do for their families, their friends. They wind up unable to hold steady jobs. They have unhealthy babies . . . innocent victims of their addiction. The bright side is that people like you . . . people who say NO to drugs It seems like the only time we get together is at a funeral, was the way Robert Butler, of Travel Roberts, explained the impetus for the gather ings that happened in Portland Aug. 26 & 27. Over 250 people, some coming from Texas, Colorado, California and Washington joined friends in Portland for what turned out to be a very successful weekend. Although many people were missed, this time, the organiz ers don’t intend to let that happen at future events. Renewing acquain- Second Annual Awards Banquest October 22, 1987 The Awards Banquet will be held at the LLOYD CENTER RED LION. Awards will be presented to various businesses and person in the commu nity. There will be a delicious dinner, soft jazz and a DYNAMIC SPEAKER . . . all the markings of a great evening! To be a free people, we must be free of drugs. We must be free to choose our own destiny, and live up to our full potential. I’d like to quote the first four lines of a poem of hope, written by a street youth who kicked his drug habit: I've had a hard time . . . But I'm starting to see That without the dope . . . I'm a brand new me. It is my personal hope that by banding together, we will WIN the battle to free our neighborhoods of drugs. Once we do that, we can use those same energies to make other changes: More jobs, and job training . . . educational opportunities . . . clean and safe neighborhoods, and everything else that’s part of the good life.
