Ring, ring, ring —my phone does every few minutes, almost driving me to the point of no return. SOMEBODY CALL DAMMASCH! It's Monday morning, just seven days from show day, and Portland s ultra-conservative attitude is starting to show. "That's just not the kind of concert we want our kids to attend." Why the heck not! They've been listening to the records for the last few months, and you didn t say too much then. And what about this, "They've had riots at their shows!" Bull, Bull, Bull. They did a 65-city tour last year (one of them at the Tacoma Dome on New Year's Eve) and only had trouble at one in Southern Califor nia, and have since stepped up their security to ensure that there will be no j; « i repeats. On to the next great myth: RUN/DMC uses explicit and lewd language. Wrong again. RUN/DMC is the Creme d'la Creme, The Kings of Rapp, ; breaking every record and rule pertaining to music of its kind, mostly due to the sensitivity to everyday issues and positive messages that are the essential roots of RUN/DMC. RUN/DMC was the only act of its kind to be included in the Live Aid ben- nefit and has won numerous awards, from Black Music awards to Gram mies, and I don't think it was for their explicit and lewd language. On the other hand The Beastie Boys have been dubbed "The Rude Boys of Rapp and Roll". Hublien Inc. has reported twice the sales of Brass Mon key since the release of the Beastie's record of the same name. The Beastie Boys are not really new to rapp, having released previous albums, but with the release of the triple platnum "Licensed To III", the bad-boy image has them at the top of the charts and on the tip of every body's tongue. Kids have always identified with rebelious lyrics, all the way back to the days of Cab Calloway. All in all, it's about time for Oregonians to wake up to the fact that it is 1987, and in order to grow, you need to open your mind and check out the 5^? ; - ? « . •» •••**- s ’ \ V. •’ V-» " a ; • V < t.* \w .’ <?í .*v:«z • • • •* ? ’ •' » *' facts and not listen to fiction. I think that parents are getting excited mostly because of the way the kids are reacting to the coming event. And I think we should also remember that school's out. It's the start of summer, and the kids just want to let off í some steam. TIPPIN-INN First Annual 4th of July Picnic Lot Behind Tippin-lnn 838 N.
