Pediatric Nurse Practitioners A New
Source of Information For Parents
A new baby can be an exciting
and rewarding experience
But.
m today's information age. parents
often have more questions about
childcare than they can answer
themselves
Resourceful parents,
determined to gain as much know
ledge and advise as possible, read
scads of parenting books and maga
zines, choose from an array of new
products and take classes with titles
ranging from "H ow to Care for Your
Baby While Caring for Yourself,"
to "H ow To Make Your Baby a
Superbaby."
But an important
and easily accessible source of in
formation which (isrents may over
look is the Pediatric Nurse Practi
tioner. a medical professional with
an advanced nursing degree who
specializes in well baby care in
many pediatric dices and hospi
tais.
"Parents always have questions,"
says Barbara Ha< hman. a PNP prac
ticmg a the Childien's Medical Cen
ter m Dallas they wonder if they II
be good parents if they II know
when their baby is sick and what
products will be tv»st for their baby
Well baby care is simply the art of
k nowring how to care for your
baby s health when he she is well
which can be difficult for a lot of
new parents.”
Pediatric Nurse Practitioners offer
day to day advice on what s good
foi babies Primarily, they are tram
ed to assess a child's health and to
expedite the appropriate care But.
because PNP s work with hundreds
of babies and take an active role in
well baby care they can provide
parents with nurturing advice and
solid infermation on what choices
new parents have to mak e on a daily
basis
"The leal )ob for the PNP is to be
a counselor and confidante to par
onts who often have questions
about nutrition development and
behavior," says Hackman
"They
ask: 'Why is my child developing
rashes?' and Should I use natural
baby food?' PNPs play a crutial
iole in delivering the often neglec
ted common information that pa
rents, especially new parents need
and often do not get in the pre
natal classes they attend

Delinquent Tax Interest
Deductible on 1986 Returns
Oregon taxpayers who still owe
taxes can save money if they pay up
before January 1, 1987
That's because they may deduct
all interest paid on delinquent taxes
on both their 1986 federal and state
returns
But the new federal tax reform
act will allow deduction on federal
returns of only 65 percent of interest
paid in 1987 The deduction will be
even less in years after 1987
The Oregon Legislature will de
cide next year whether to follow the
new federal law and allow deduc
bons of 65 percent of paid interest
in 1987 or to come up with a sepa
rate formula.
Federal and state returns for 1986
both must be filed by April 15. 1987
