August 27, 1986, Portland Observer, Page 5 PCC Cascade Starts New Orientation and Placement Program Dr. Sobomehin Named to Commission by Jerry Garner Dr. Dapo Sobomehin has been appointed by Oregon's Governor Vic Atiyeh to be a member of the Oregon Commission on Black Af fairs. Dr Sobomehin's term begins September 26, 1986 and ends June 30, 1987 He replaces Barbara J. Finley Branch who resigned The Commission on Black Af fairs is authorized under ORS 185 410 to work for the implements tion and establishment of econo mic, social, legal, and political equality for African Americans in Oregon The Commission is to mo nitor existing programs and legis lation; to identify and research pro gram areas and recommend appro priate actions, to maintain a liaison between the African American community and government enti ties; and to encourage African American representation on state boards and commissions. Dr. Sobomehin is a human re lations specialist for the Metropoh tan Human Relations Commission He and his wife, Lisa, have three children, Tunde, Dele, and Niyi. Dr. Sobomehin has also served as Research Assistant for the Houston Independent School District, Texas; Administrative Analyst Employ ment Specialist for Open Road. Inc. in San Diego and Los Angeles, Cali forma; and Legaj Research Recruit er for the People's College of Law, Los Angeles, California Dr Sobomehin has a B A DE — gree from Calumet College. Chica go, Illinois, a M A degree from Governors State University, Forest Park, Illinois, and a Ph D in philo sophy from California Pacific Uni versify, San Diego, California Dr. Sobomehin said that he was honored to be appointed to the Commission by Governor Atiyeh "Equally important, by being on the Commission on Black Affairs, I, working in conjunction with other Commission members, will be able to come up with solutions to ad dress the overt injustices that are being committed against African Americans throughout Oregon Dr Sobomehin said his main focus as a member of the Commis sion will be problem facing African American youth "African Ameri can youth joblessness has been at Red Cross Babysitting Classes Scheduled Boys and girls 11 years and older have the opportunity to develop their knowledge and chances for babysitting jobs in a Red Cross "Babysitting" course The two tw o session courses are: American Red Cross 3131 N Vancouver Ave Saturdays, Sept 6 ft 13 8 30 a m to noon Good Samaritan Hospital 1015 N W 22nd Saturdays.
